The Road to Oz
The Road to Oz: Twists, Turns, Bumps, and Triumphs in the Life of L. Frank Baum | Kathleen Krull
1 post | 2 read | 3 to read
KATHLEEN KRULL’S LIVELY text traces the life of L. Frank Baum from his dreamy privileged childhood in mid-19th-century upstate New York through the many detours on his road to Oz. A failure as an actor, a breeder of prize chickens, a merchant in a wild west town, among other occupations, he finally made a success doing exactly what he had always loved to do: tell stories for children. Along the way, we see the antecedents of the Scarecrow, the Tin Man, green glasses, and other characters and attributes of the famous fantasy land. This is the first biography of L. Frank Baum that children can enjoy. With the same verve she brought to her biography of Dr. Seuss, Kathleen Krull’s wry prose couples with Kevin Hawke’s exuberant paintings and drawings to create a book not to be missed by Oz fans of all ages.

Pickpick

Just read this great biography about L. Frank Baum today with my 9 year old as part of our history studies. It's by Kathleen Krull who told Baum's story in such a delightful way, particularly if you are familiar with the Oz world. Lots of little details about the time period (late 1800's - early 1900's) and about how the stories came to be. Made us want to back and read them again. Pictured here with our incomplete collection of Oz books...

awishman This book is on my TBR! 8y
christineandbooks @awishman The bio? Yay! It's short and sweet and I thought it was cool that she'd named it for he Oz book (although that's my least favorite of the series). 8y
awishman Yes the bio! We finished The Lost Princess of Oz earlier this month. They are really underrated books. I love reading them with my kids. 8y
christineandbooks I agree about them being underrated. Let me know what you think of the bi once you've read it! 8y
