The Theater and Its Double
The Theater and Its Double | Antonin Artaud
2 posts | 5 read
A collection of manifestos originally published in 1938, in which the French artist and philosopher attacks conventional assumptions about the drama, and calls for the influx of irrational material - based on dreams, religion, and emotion - in order to make the theater vital for modern audiences.

There's no way that I can post a picture of my favorite bookstore and do it justice. This is the Ateneo bookstore in Buenos Aires. It's regarded as one of the most beautiful bookstores in the world and, as you can see, it used to be an equally beautiful theater. Don't you love it?

I disagree wholesale with pretty much everything Artaud has to say--and his philosophies usually produce the kind of insufferable pretentious theatre nobody outside of an art school can stand--but this is still essential reading for any serious theatre student. The last chapter on actor-as-athlete Is particularly worthwhile. ⭐️⭐️
