Nancy Wake
Nancy Wake | Russell Braddon
1 post | 3 read | 3 to read
Nancy Wake is one of the true heroines of the Second World War. Born in New Zealand, she was living in Marseille and was married to Frenchman Hanri Fiocca when the Germans invaded. Nancy immediately became active in the Resistance movement, smuggling messages and food to underground groups in Southern France and helping refugees flee to Spain. By 1943 she was on the Gestapo 'most wanted' list. Their nickname for her, due to her elusiveness, was the 'White Mouse'. It was time for Nancy to leave France. After six escape attempts Nancy reached Britain - where she promptly became one of the thirty-nine women to join the British Special Operations Executive. Parachuted back into France, she became the virtual leader of a 7,000-strong branch of the Marquis. This book tells the extraordinary wartime story of this exceptional woman.

Pickpick

Nancy Wake was one of the most notorious spies of WWII and #1 most wanted by the Gestapo. She was smuggled out of France to London and then parachuted back in to fight right in the heart of the French resistance.

There‘s lots of different books about Nancy. This one was written in 1956 and Braddon interviewed Nancy and her colleagues extensively. I thought he sometimes dragged out details about her clothes and beauty regimes but glossed over 👇🏻

i.z.booknook some major battles. Perhaps that‘s the way Nancy told her story. Despite this it was still incredible to read her story and he managed to get across her fantastic and funny and cheeky character which was lovely. I‘ll definitely read another about her story though to see what other details other writer focused on. 3y
