Maternity Leave: A Novel | Julie Halpern
7 posts | 4 read | 12 to read
Julie Halpern's Maternity Leave tells the profane, profound and just plain funny story of a professional woman who thinks she's ready for a baby but her maternity leave proves otherwise. Thirty six year old Annie Schwartz-Jensen is a middle school teacher on maternity leave-a time she imagined as uninterrupted, blissful bonding with her baby. Instead she is dealing with her body leaking from every possible orifice, a baby who won't sleep, a husband who still wants to have sex with her (is he nuts??), single friends who are clueless, and a mother who picked now to take a vacation. The only people who REALLY understand Annie are the wonderful people she spends sleepless nights with on QVC: Keep those velveteen table runners and non-jiggle stretch pants coming! As Annie navigates life with her new baby, she realizes that not all Mommies are created equal. But she is determined to find her way, love her baby, her husband, herself---even if she has to wear nipple protectors for the rest of her child-bearing life.

Mehso-so

This book was very funny, however I was a little bothered by how much she seemed to dislike her child at first. I suppose my not being a mother yet has something to do with that. Perhaps once I have a baby of my own I will be able to relate more.

MelissaSue81 I‘ve not read this book but I feel like this is common in novels about motherhood. Almost like it‘s (over) used as a tool to move the story forward. I am pretty sure I never disliked my babies as newborns (I was exhausted and thought I wouldn‘t survive.. but I didn‘t dislike them.) Now, at 6 and 9... yeah sometimes I dislike them! 7y

12 pages in and this book has me cracking up:

“Finally, that big-ass cantaloupe head busts its way out of my nether regions.”

Pickpick

This book is fun to read, especially if you are the type of parent who enjoys the website Scary Mommy and I am. I love books that show having a newborn isn't all rainbows and unicorns, though obviously babies vary. I am not a fan of the newborn stage and enjoy the toddler/preschooler stage so much more.

LauraBeth My kid didn't stop crying non stop until she was three. We'd clock her crying for two hours straight. All the dr's could say was "colic". Meanwhile my friends all had perfect babies who never cried and slept all the time. We never got over the shock of it to be brave enough have another one... 8y
BookishShelly @LauraBeth my son thankfully didn't have colic but he appeared allergic to sleep. He was almost 2 before he slept through the night. And he'd take half hour long naps. I wanted to give son a sibling despite all that but no such luck. 8y
Gayan My daughter cried every single time she was put down and didn't stop until you picked her back up. That was 33 years ago and I never had another. 😳 8y
razmanda Thank you so much for admitting you don't like newborns! My daughter is 14 months old and I loved her from the moment she was born. But I didn't like her until she was 3 months old. She was a "good" baby but I need more affirmation than a newborn can provide, LOL. 8y
ImaginativeMom I hear ya! My fifteen year old cried for the first six months of her life UNLESS I was walking her in a circle, shushing and gently rocking her. It took us a while to make friends. 😖 8y

Currently reading. Big change from Slade House but I do like reading books about new motherhood since having my 3yo.

BookMusings Curious about this! 8y

This is making me relive all my post-childbirth thoughts (good and bad) in a hilarious way. I am seeing myself in the MC so much it's scary!
