Crossing the Threshold of Hope
Crossing the Threshold of Hope | Pope John Paul II
6 posts | 4 read
A great international bestseller, the book in which, on the eve of the millennium, Pope John Paul II brings to an accessible level the great theological concerns of our lives. He goes to the heart of his personal beliefs and speaks with passion about the existence of God; about the dignity of man; about pain, suffering, and evil; about eternal life and the meaning of salvation; about hope; about the relationship of Christianity to other faiths and of Catholicism to other branches of the Christian faith. With the humility and generosity of spirit for which he is known, John Paul II speaks directly and forthrightly to all people. His Message:

Having not had full access to the library over the last year, I have done more #spiritualreading than normal, which I can post now it is Lent. This was an interesting book by Pope JPII based on questions from a journalist for a television interview he was not able fit into his schedule.

Pickpick

Filled with wisdom. I have been afraid of reading this book for a while. Afraid that it'd be difficult, or over my head. But, in fact, it's very readable. Although I wish I had a deeper understanding of certain philosophical movements, I never felt like I was missing things. I could hardly put it down. Loved it.

"Significantly, the [Dogmatic Constitution on the Church, Lumen Gentium] also reminds us of the universal call to holiness in the Church. This vocation is universal and concerns each of the baptized, every Christian. It is always very personal, connected to work, to one's profession. It is an account rendered of the talents each person has received -- whether one has made God or bad use of them."

"God is always on the side of suffering. His omnipotence is manifested precisely in the fact that He freely accepted suffering.... The fact that He stayed on the Cross until the end, the fact that on the Cross He could say, as do all who suffer: My God, My God, why have you forsaken me? Mk 15:34, has remained in human history the strongest argument. If the agony on the Cross had not happened, the truth that God is Love would have been unfounded.

"Could God go further in His stooping down, in His drawing near to man?...In a certain sense God has gone too far!... Precisely because [Christ] called God His Father, because He revealed Him so openly in Himself, He could not but elicit the impression that it was too much...Man was no longer able to tolerate such closeness, and thus protests began."
