Watch How We Walk
Watch How We Walk | Jennifer LoveGrove
1 post | 2 read
Captivating and heart-wrenching from start to finish When Emily was a little girl, all she wanted to be when she grew up was a Full-Time Pioneer; in her Jehovah’s Witness family, the only imaginable future is a life of knocking on doors and handing out Watchtower magazines. But Emily starts to challenge her upbringing. She becomes closer to her closeted uncle, Tyler, as her older sister, Lenora, hangs out with boys, wears makeup, and gets a startling new haircut. After Lenora disappears, everything changes for Emily, and as she deals with her mental devastation she is forced to consider a different future. Alternating between Emily’s life as a child and her adult life in the city, Watch How We Walk offers a haunting, cutting exploration of “disfellowshipping,” proselytization, and cultural abstinence, as well as the Jehovah’s Witness attitude towards the “worldlings” outside of their faith. Sparse, vivid, suspenseful, and darkly humorous, Jennifer LoveGrove’s debut novel is an emotional and visceral look inside an isolationist religion through the eyes of the unforgettable Emily.

In an effort to slim down my overwhelming to be read stacks, I did an unhaul game with 10 different books that I haven‘t read yet. I read the first three pages of all ten books and decided which ones would stay and which ones would go. You can find out what books made the cut here: https://youtu.be/BepW6SYLAGU

EadieB @Butterflyamore That was an interesting way to unhaul books. I need to unhaul some books too but I usually check out the ratings on Goodreads and Amazon and anything below a 4 star rating gets unhauled. I also read the descriptions and some reviews as they are very telling whether I will like the book or not. 4y
abookishbutterfly @EadieB I‘m glad you have some methods that work for you because getting rid of books is such a tough decision. I definitely think this method worked for me so I‘m glad I figured that out. I‘ve read books with high ratings that I haven‘t liked and books with low ratings that I have liked so it‘s so hard to tell for me based on ratings. 4y

EadieB @Butterflyamore Read some reviews on Litsy about The Three. Lots of good ones! But checking Amazon and Goodreads only 3.1 and 3.2 respectively. So I think you should get rid of it. (edited) 4y
abookishbutterfly @EadieB I am getting rid of it but I am going to continue with my method rather than going by ratings. I think this method definitely works for me and I don‘t always have the same opinion, when it comes to average ratings. 4y
EadieB @Butterflyamore You should do whatever works best for you. I just like to check the ratings and reviews as a backup. 4y
