Zola headed to the East End of London.. he visited the â€˜Rowton lodging-houses, Rothschild almshouses, various sweaters ‘ dens, sundry Jewish homes of Whitechapel, and Italian ones at Saffron Hill‘.(In passing, I can‘t help but note that at this very time several of my own great-grandparents were living in â€˜sundry Jewish homes of Whitechapel‘!)
