Why Are All the Black Kids Sitting Together in the Cafeteria?: And Other Conversations about Race
Why Are All the Black Kids Sitting Together in the Cafeteria?: And Other Conversations about Race | Beverly Daniels Tatum
3 posts | 4 read | 3 to read
The classic, bestselling book on the psychology of racism-now fully revised and updated Walk into any racially mixed high school and you will see Black, White, and Latino youth clustered in their own groups. Is this self-segregation a problem to address or a coping strategy? Beverly Daniel Tatum, a renowned authority on the psychology of racism, argues that straight talk about our racial identities is essential if we are serious about enabling communication across racial and ethnic divides. These topics have only become more urgent as the national conversation about race is increasingly acrimonious. This fully revised edition is essential reading for anyone seeking to understand the dynamics of race in America. "An unusually sensitive work about the racial barriers that still divide us in so many areas of life."-Jonathan Kozol

Pickpick

The author explores racism & how people explore & come to understand their identities from a psychological standpoint. She explains studies & their impact through a person's lifetime. As a teacher, I found these developmental & psychological studies incredibly interesting, and could see ways I might find this helpful while working w/students. This is a useful & fascinating read regarding race & the impact of racism, especially in young people.

kspenmoll Great review. We got this book from our district to read. I need to start it! 4y

Happy Independent Bookstore Day, fellow Littens! 😊💜📚

The hubby and I are hoping to visit two of our local indies today and walk away with most of these titles 🤞 (I've been keeping an eye on their online inventory, but that could always change!)

In addition, I hope we can do some shopping for our nieces.

Will any of you be participating in today's event?

Is there anything in particular you'll be looking for?

Librariana @sb3626 - isn't that always the case!? 😊 I know we all need to remain mindful of our individual budgets, but supporting local, independent businesses is always such a nice thing. Gives one plenty of good feelings! 😁💜📚 4y
Hooked_on_books Powell‘s has 20% off everything, so I shopped online with them last night. I had been hanging onto a birthday gift card and finally used it. 4y
Librariana @Hooked_on_books - I'm so glad you got to do some well-deserved shopping and got to take advantage of a gift card 😊💜 What kind of goodies did you get to pick up? I'm always curious about what you're reading since you share such wonderful reviews! 4y
Hooked_on_books Aw, thank you! I got a variety of books from my TBR, including essays on abortion, Book Love by Debbie Tung and The Disaster Tourist. I think it‘s a good mix. I should get them in a little over a week, so I‘ll tag you when I post the stack. ☺️ 4y
