From Akoko daughter of a chief, married to another chief, to Maria who searches for a new way of life after a series of tragedies, and finally to Elizabeth who works as a teacher and bonds with her doctor daughter in law

But it packs in a lot of events and trauma. Childhood death, world war, missionaries and AIDS among others.
