Zelu is a disabled author whose book, Rusted Robots, becomes a worldwide sensation. This book follows Zelu prior to and after her fame. Not quite a sci-fi book (there is some space travel & high tech gear in the main book), her Robots book definitely is—a dystopia set in Africa where robots and AI (bodiless bots) are at war. So we also follow the travails of Robots‘ main character Ankara in this book within a book. Both stories are interesting ⬇️

Texreader And infuriating in their own ways. What is mind-blowing is the last chapter when both stories come together, which elevates this book to possibly the best book of the year for me. My face reading the entire last chapter: 😲 Needless to say: I highly recommend it. #camplitsy @squirrelbrain @BarbaraBB @Megabooks 3h
Prairiegirl_reading I got stuck behind Wild Dark Shore so I didn‘t get to this one. I must!! It sounds great! So glad you enjoyed it, lots of others seemed to as well. (edited) 3h
TheBookHippie Did you read her other books when we had her country for #FOODANDLIT? That‘s how I found her! 2h

I visited my parents this weekend and Dad shared some flower seeds with me. They just happened to be the Marvel of #Peru Four O Clocks! How cool is that? #foodandlit @Catsandbooks

Soldiers kill Nina‘s father in cold blood, and as a result her brother Miguel joins up with the re-emerging Shining Path and their pastor is thrown in jail for trying to hold the soldiers accountable. Years later, the pastor—out of jail—comes to see Nina, informing her he‘s learned that Miguel is still alive. When the pastor shortly goes missing, she drops everything to find him and Miguel in the deep wilds of Peru. Action-packed, well-written, ⬇️

Texreader we learn a lot about the country, its corrupt soldiers and the equally corrupt Shining Path—relying on Americans‘ addiction to cocaine to fund their revolution. Nina is a tough cookie and she will be tested accordingly. This is the first of two books and when I get time I‘d like to read it, too. This one was lengthy though so I‘ll have to plan ahead if book 2 is about the same length. The books appear to be self-published, often a pejorative. ⬇️ 22h
Texreader At least with this book he is an excellent author with a complex plot that is well-told. #foodandlit #Peru (edited) 22h

#FoodAndLit #Peru

I couldn‘t not read Paddington, the most famous bear from Peru, this month. I followed that up with the chapter in the tagged book about the bears in Peru. (A re-read from #Naturalitsy) And for lunch today we went to a Peruvian place near our hiking trail that we‘ve been meaning to try.

TheBookHippie Love it all!!! 1d

Butterfinger Are you the one who eats vegetarian? I bet Peruvian food had a lot to offer. 24h
Bookwormjillk @Butterfinger yes I am. This was a chicken restaurant but they still had a few things for me. I think Peruvian food in general is very veggie friendly though. 21h

I am reading both Deep Cuts and Small Pleasures and both are very entertaining. The tagged book I want to read for #FoodAndLit #Peru so I should read fast! We‘ll see, this will be another busy week working.

Not from the tagged cookbook but from a local Peruvian Nikkei (somewhat) upmarket fast food place: Donburi Crispy Chicken Nikkei with rice, chicken karaage, about 10 ( 🙄) individual choclo kernels (white corn), deep-fried Padrón peppers, fried eggplant & 3 sauces (ají mayo, ají panca, ají miso). Japanese cheesecake for dessert. Very nice. Could have been cheaper!

Dilara Other half had the salmon deluxe plate (various salmon-based sushis/makis, some with maracuja sauce), which he found too busy and disappointing compared to normal, plainer sushi. His lemon and yuzu meringue pie was delicious, though. 2d

TEArificbooks I liked Track of the Cat and if you are reading the USA then it is a good series for that. Each book the National park ranger is working at a different park in a different state. 1d
Bookwormjillk @TEArificbooks yes! The first one is in Texas which I already have this year, but I‘m hoping for a new favorite series. 1d

Spanish conquistador Francisco Pizarro was the illegitimate son of a very poor woman who became the ruler of #Peru by conquering the Incas. The Incas put up a good fight, and won many battles. But their territory continued to shrink as the Incas sought a place to live in the mountains. This book tells their story from the Spanish arrival and the death of the last Inca emperor. The book feels comprehensive but interesting. My only complaint ⬇️

Texreader is the author editorializing too much: he states as fact the Incas were benevolent rulers and theirs was a utopia. I think that goes too far. Just because the Spanish were so wrong in everything they did in colonizing the Americas, that doesn‘t mean the opposite (in essence a perfect society) is true of the colonized peoples. Setting that aside, it‘s an excellent history of the end of the Incas and Peru sounds so beautiful and bountiful. ⬇️ 2d
