3 posts | 3 read | 2 to read
"Gritty, passionate and violent, this thrilling book is a real page-turner and a damn good read. It brings Spartacusand ancient Rometo vivid, colorful life." Steven Pressfield, author of Gates of Fire Long the stuff of legends, Spartacus is known to most modern readers through the classic Kubrick film version of Howard Fast's novel. Now bestselling historical novelist Ben Kane returns to the source material and presents a lively and compelling new vision of the man who was SpartacusRoman army auxillary, slave, gladiator and ultimately the leader of an army of slaves who nearly brought Rome to its knees. Ben Kane's brilliant novel begins in the Thracian village to which Spartacus has returned after escaping from life as an auxiliary in the Roman army. Jealous of his attachment to Ariadne, a Dionysian priestess, the Thracian king betrays Spartacus to the Romans who take him, along with Ariadne, into captivity and to the school of gladiators at Capua. Against the background of the unbelievable brutality of gladiatorial life, Spartacus and Crixus the Gaul plan the audacious overthrow of their Roman masters. They escape and flee to Vesuvius, where they recruit and train an army of escaped slaves that will have to face the conquerors of the known world, the most successful deadly army in all of history in a battle that will set in motion the legend that is Spartacus.

I am posting one book per day from my extensive to-be-read collection. No description and providing no reason for wanting to read it, I just do. Some will be old, some will be new. Don‘t judge me - I have a lot of books. Join the fun if you want.
This is day 149

RamsFan1963 Funny this should come up. I just discovered that Spartacus was never a gladiator. He was a soldier and a slave, and while he trained at a gladiatorial school, he never fought in an arena. 4y

Pickpick

This was the first part of the Spartacus story, made famous by the truly classic 1960 film starring Kirk Douglas and so many other Stars of the time. Can't wait to get to the second book telling the second part of the story. I loved this book and the whole story - Ben Kane does know how to tell a terrific story, although long he kept me gripped. If you enjoy Roman Fiction do give him a try - Read and enjoyed The Forgotten Legion & Hannibal series.

Time to return to some Historical Fiction, so thought I'd return to one of my favourite authors, Ben Kane. Read and really enjoyed the Hannibal Trilogy and The Forgotten Legion Trilogy. I would certainly recommend the Ben Kane books if you like Roman period books, if you want somewhere to start off I would suggest The Forgotten Legion Trilogy. Will be interested to see how Spartacus compares to the classic film!
I am Spartacus! #Historicalfiction

Melissa_J Oh, I liked this book! I hope you enjoy it, Andrew! 7y
Andrew65 @melissa_j Yet to find a Ben Kane book I didn't enjoy, it was following you reading The Forgotten Legion and the positive review you left that led to me discovering him. So thank you. 😊 7y
