The Red Tree
The Red Tree | Shaun Tan
4 posts | 8 read | 2 to read
A small child awakes to find blackened leaves falling from her bedroom ceiling, threatening to quietly overwhelm her. 'Sometimes you wake up with nothing to look forward to ...' As she wanders around a world that is complex, puzzling and alienating, she is overtaken by a myriad of feelings. Just as it seems all hope is lost, the girl returns to her bedroom to find that a tiny red seedling has grown to fill the room with warm light. Astonishing Perth artist, Shaun Tan's latest creation, THE RED TREE, is a book about feelings - feelings that can not always be simply expressed in words. It is a series of imaginary landscapes conjured up by the wizardry of Shaun Tan's masterful and miraculous art. As a kind of fable, THE RED TREE seeks to remind us that, though some bad feelings are inevitable, they are always tempered by hope.

A book about how there is always hope.

I usual Tan‘s illustrations are amazing.

Mandoul Tan is a brilliant illustrator and storyteller. The Arrival is one of my all-time favourites, so I'm keen to check this out soon. Thanks 😁 2y
AnneCecilie @Mandoul I love The Arrival too. I‘ve loved everything of his that I have read so far. 2y

#MarchMagic Day 19: #BookYouOftenRecommend - read this aloud for Shaun Tan recently with Arabic translation. There is no fanfare, no neat resolutions, no quick fixes in this narrative. I always have a quiet awed hush at the end of the book when I finish reading this in front of a huge adult crowd– a sharp intake of anticipation, a bated breath, a hint of more that the reader should resolve on his or her own. #AugustIsATrip Day 18: Guess where I was here? In front of Shaun Tan's home in Perth, #Australia before he moved to Melbourne. :) Here‘s my interview with him at GatheringBooks whereby I asked him what his red tree was: https://wp.me/pDlzr-5Jr
