Congrats to @CSeydel reaching 50,000 Litfluence Points! She's hosting a fun giveaway; visit this link for the deets: https://www.litsy.com/web/post/2852698

What I love most about Litsy is stated in the pic above (anyone remember this and Marlo Thomas?) It's not just the statement where I feel I can say what I want/need to say, but the people here are incredible and so open and welcoming. It truly is a special place to be!

Thanks for the tag, @TheSpineView! 🤗

1. Not to brag, but I was pretty good in high school; I graduated 3rd in my class of over 600 students (thank goodness, for I would have hated to give a speech!). But then I discovered college and was legally okay to drink at the age of 18, so partying interfered with my scholastic abilities for a while. 🤣
2. My students loved the tagged book! Who wouldn't want to kill their English teacher? 🤩

What a fabulous idea, @TheBookHippie! View her original post here: https://www.litsy.com/web/post/2852357

We all could use some laughs. Here's one from my life years ago:
While playing Trivial Pursuit with my mom and little sister, she received the following question: “What was the title of Richard Nixon's biography?“

Her answer (in complete innocence): “I'm a Dick?“

This still makes me laugh out loud, and I tease her regularly about it. 🤣

CatLass007 When I was in the 8th grade our West Virginia History assigned each of us to memorize and recite one of two poems. We just counted off 1-2, 1-2, and all the ones had to learn Joyce Kilmer‘s “Trees” and all the twos had to learn “Woodsman, Spare That Tree,” which was more than twice as long. I don‘t remember the poet. Then she started giving us extra credit if we learned and recited both poems. The verses from “Woodsman, Spare That Tree” (cont)⬇️ 14h
See All 6 Comments
CatLass007 are right at the edge of my memory. I feel like I could recite it if I could just reach out and touch the words. I was just about to say that I can‘t even imagine remembering “Trees” but I just remembered the first line. I‘m not sure I could remember any more than that. It‘s been 50 years! 14h
dabbe @CatLass007 What a lovely story! I believe there is such a power in memorizing poetry or a monologue from something like a Shakespearean play. I still can recite “Immense et Rouge“ by Jacques Prévert because of my French teacher having us recite a poem in French! 🤩 12h

Thoughts, Shardlakians?

AnneCecilie I‘m not really one to look up things as I read unless there‘s a reference to a painting and I want to see it 2d
dabbe I find I want to see pictures of things, too, like The Solent, The Mary Rose, Portsmouth, etc. I also look up some of the people (like Richard Rich), and yep, he was just as evil as he's portrayed in the novels. 2d
kwmg40 I like looking up the places where Shardlake goes. In fact, I'll be travelling to London very soon to visit my daughter, and I'm hoping to visit the Temple area so I can see where Shardlake spent much of his time! 1d
See All 7 Comments
dabbe @kwmg40 Oh, please take pictures and share! 🤩🤩🤩 1d
kwmg40 @dabbe Yes, I definitely plan to do that! 1d
lil1inblue I'm definitely interested in researching more about the Battle of Solent, as well as the Italian War as a whole. I like “zooming out,“ so to speak, to see how the events fit into world politics of the time. Previously, I went down rabbit holes reading about H VIII's wives, and I also read quite a bit about Greek Fire. 19h
dabbe @lil1inblue #ditto! I have read a bunch of books about his wives, too. So fascinating! I came out truly admiring Anne of Cleves and Catherine Parr. And Greek fire was so interesting, wasn't it? I'm also fascinated by water, so I loved looking up pictures of The Solent and the English Channel. It's amazing to think that England was once landlocked to the continent; you can still see it in the southeaster outline of the country! 🤩 18h

Thoughts, Shardlakians?

LiseWorks Greed! 2d
OutsmartYourShelf They're sly bullies who pick on the weak or those they consider inferior. 2d
AnneCecilie They feel that they are entitled to what they want because they now are rich 2d
See All 8 Comments
dabbe @Liseworks @OutsmartYourShelf @AnneCecilie ... Even though Dryrick and Furstowe are not upper class or nobility, they still lord it over others less fortunate. There was such a pecking order during this time period--the social pyramid where everyone knew his place. And women didn't even belong anywhere on it! 2d
kwmg40 I find Dryrick an interesting character. His arrogance and bullying make him loathsome, but at the same time, it seems like he might have some good qualities in him and his unpleasantness might be caused by pressures or inner struggles that we don't know about. 1d
dabbe @kwmg40 He does seems to really love his wife and children, so there is that. He also had to start from the bottom and work his way up. I find him to be quite insecure underneath all of his bravado. 1d
lil1inblue They are all about gaining money and power, regardless of the damage they cause in order to obtain them. The entitlement is so...icky. Dryrick and Priddis are particularly interesting since they had to work their way up, but seem to have a loathing for people who were where they were when they started. Is this a self-loathing of sorts? 20h
dabbe @lil1inblue Excellent thought. Or it could be a thought of “I got mine, now I don't want you to have yours and possibly rise above me again.“ Or both! 😊 18h

LiseWorks Was Ellen put in the nut house so the rapist could get away with it? 2d
LiseWorks Hugh just wants to go to war. He seems subdued. They all are! 2d
OutsmartYourShelf I think Leacon seems a bit disillusioned with army life. Can't make my mind up about Hugh, whether he is being mistreated in some way or if he is the problem. Poor Lamkin! One thing I dislike about this series is the constant animal deaths. 2d
See All 14 Comments
AnneCecilie @LiseWorks I wondered if she was put away to cover up a murder 2d
AnneCecilie I‘m starting to wonder what Calfhill saw. Has it do with the forest or is it related to the family in a way. The dog episode makes it obvious that there‘s a lot going on under the surface in that family 2d
dabbe @LiseWorks Interesting question, and one I hope we find out! 2d
dabbe @LiseWorks It makes me wonder if he wants to unleash his hidden rage onto the French since he can't do it at home. 2d
dabbe @OutsmartYourShelf I think Leacon has PTSD. HIs war stories told to Shardlake are simply heartbreaking. And something happened to Hugh and his sister. I hope Michael Calfhall is completely innocent. And I am HORRIFIED by what happened to Lamkin. My previous dogs were greyhounds. They're usually so gentle, but if you half-starve them like they were starved at Hoyland, who can blame them for fresh meat. 😱 2d
dabbe @AnneCecilie She definitely saw at least one man die in the fire. Or was he pushed in there? 🤔 2d
dabbe @AnneCecilie As awful as Abigail is, I felt so sorry for her losing her pet in such a gruesome fashion. And her admonishing Shardlake and telling him that he can't see what's directly in front of him--that definitely is foreshadowing bad things to come with this family. 2d
kwmg40 I find myself wanting to know more about all the new characters. What secrets are they hiding? What are they thinking? Sansom is really good at giving all the supporting characters depth and mystery. 1d
dabbe @kwmg40 I also appreciate the frustration that Shardlake feels when he can't quite solve the puzzles ... yet. 1d
lil1inblue I feel as frustrated as Shardlake regarding the Hobbeys. Something is amiss, but I can't figure it out! I have no idea what to think of Abigail. She's terrible, but I feel like there is a reason for it. It's unsettling - Sansom does a great job of creating tension. 20h

LiseWorks The people don't seem to have a say about war. Especially the men they are gathering to go fight. The rich make the decisions, and the rest have to suffer. Women do not have a say in any. I'm glad to see the queen secretly ask Shardlake to do something about the ward for a friend. 2d
AnneCecilie History has a tendency to repeat itself. When one or more groups gets more rights, there‘s bound to be a backlash. 2d
dabbe @LiseWorks Catherine Parr has some power, but even she hides from H VIII. I have always wondered how you could knowingly marry someone you knew had had two former wives killed. What the heck? 2d
See All 13 Comments
dabbe @AnneCecilie 🎯🎯🎯 2d
kwmg40 The thing that struck me was how wars could be started or change course based on the whims of the leaders, while all the ordinary people suffer the consequences. 1d
dabbe @kwmg40 It reminds me of THE ILIAD, where the gods play the humans like pieces on a chessboard. The absolute control these monarchs had, especially H VIII, is astonishing. No wonder some people want to be king! 😊 1d
kwmg40 @dabbe A good comparison! 1d
AnneCecilie @dabbe @LiseWorks Maybe that just shows how little power women had? She was just a pawn in a game, and saying yes gave her family more power 1d
lil1inblue @dabbe That's an excellent comparison! I can definitely see H VIII in this light. 20h
lil1inblue I can't help but compare H VIII's ego to that of the tangerine dumpster fire. Their thirst for power is insatiable. On a separate note, the treatment of and discussion about mentally ill individuals is not so different than some of the things I hear today. (And it was not that long ago that we were still institutionalizing people and performing lobotomies.) 20h

LiseWorks I was so glad that Barack made up with his wife and that she was having a baby.. I don't understand why France is invading. I guess I forgot my high school history. This book is better than the others. 2d
OutsmartYourShelf Good so far, although I can't get a read on what is going on with Hugh & family he is staying with. Anything I can think of doesn't quite fit. 2d
AnneCecilie This book has me hooked so far. I feel that Sansom is using each book to look at something specific within the Tudor society and teach us about it without lecturing. 2d
See All 14 Comments
dabbe @LiseWorks Yeah, I'm glad for Barak and Tamasin, too. All I can think of re: France invading is that these two countries go back centuries filled with hate and wanting to dominate one another. England was still relatively new to being a kick-ass country, which is why I think H VIII is so cocky with all of his battles to show his strength. Perhaps France sees England as a threat--only 21 miles from Calais to the White Cliffs of Dover. 2d
dabbe @OutsmartYourShelf Something bad is definitely going on! I've read this before, so you'd think I'd remember. But nope! I'm dying to see what's really going on behind the scenes! 2d
dabbe @AnneCecilie He was quite meticulous with his research! 2d
kwmg40 This one seemed to start a little bit more slowly than the others but now I'm quite invested in the various mysteries, and I'm enjoying learning about the historical context. 1d
dabbe @kwmg40 Agree 💯. He gets more in depth as the books continue on, but we're so invested in the characters that we're okay with that ... I hope! 🤩 1d
kwmg40 @dabbe I'm definitely OK with that. I don't mind slow beginnings if I trust the author enough to know that all the setup will be worthwhile. 1d
lil1inblue I finally got to 50% last night and promptly fell asleep! There's so much going on in this book! I honestly have no idea where any of the storylines are going to end up, but I'm enjoying the ride! 20h

Lesliereadsalot I saw 79/100. Favorites include Nashville(loved the music and the characters), Coming Home (which I saw at the movies 17 days in a row, obsessed would be putting it mildly) and Midnight Express (scared me to death). 6d
Eggs 🩵💜💙 6d
Amor4Libros I got 10 this time!! 😂 6d
shortsarahrose 29 - I was pretty good on ones from the 1960s/70s, but not the ‘80s 6d
TheSpineView Thanks for the tag! 🥰💛🏷 6d
Deblovestoread Thanks for the tag! Will do 🥰 6d
BooksandCoffee4Me 30% but how fun to be reminded of the movies “Heaven Can Wait” and “Goodbye Girl!” 💛 6d
BooksandCoffee4Me @Lesliereadsalot Wow! “Coming Home” was so intense — how did seeing it so many times in two weeks affect you emotionally? 6d
DGRachel LOL. I‘ve heard of a ton of these but have only watched 10. Clearly, I dislike Academy Award winners as much as I dislike fancy book award winners. 🤣🤣 6d

dabbe @DGRachel You're in good company either way! 🤩 Thanks for playing and sharing. 📽️🍿🎬 6d
Lesliereadsalot I really had been oblivious to the Vietnam War and after seeing Coming Home the first time, I couldn‘t believe the war was going on around me and I felt compelled to see it over and over. I didn‘t know anybody who went to Vietnam, my parents never discussed it, it was so foreign to me. I‘ve never before or since felt so intensely about a movie. Totally blew me away! @BooksandCoffee4Me 6d
dabbe @Lesliereadsalot Thanks for sharing that. I was oblivious, too, and still have so much to learn about that tumultuous period. I never saw COMING HOME (added to my TBW list now) but BORN ON THE 4TH OF JULY at least made me more aware. That and GOOD MORNING, VIETNAM. The humor helped. 😊 6d
BooksandCoffee4Me @Lesliereadsalot @dabbe I‘ve made a point of sincerely thanking veterans for serving. Saw a biker wearing a Viet Nam Vet jacket and stopped where he was and thanked him. He teared up and looked so surprised. They received so little when they returned. It shouldn‘t have taken a decade or two to thank them with the wall. I was in middle school during the war and now have known many Nam vets. Most do not want to share their stories. 6d
dabbe @BooksandCoffee4Me They bravely did their job and received nothing but hatred from most of us. Shameful. 😞 5d
Lesliereadsalot Very shameful! Our boys did not belong there. I‘ve seen all the Vietnam movies but Coming Home made the biggest impression as it‘s about the soldiers when they got back. You have to imagine what it was like for them and it‘s not a pretty picture. You guys are very thoughtful! @dabbe @BooksandCoffee4Me 🩷🩷 5d
BookmarkTavern Thanks for the tag! 5d
peaKnit 26! I have rewatched All The President‘s Men so many times I should count it twice! :) and on Golden Pond, such sweet memories watching this one. 🥰 5d
dabbe @Lesliereadsalot So are you! 🩵💙🩵 5d
dabbe @peaKnit #ditto feelings on both of your choices. I've just reread and rewatched ALL THE PRESIDENT'S to bring me comfort in this chaotic mess of a country we're currently living in. As @AmyG put it, Goldberg is our Woodward & Bernstein. 👊🏻 5d
peaKnit Amen! 5d
TheLudicReader 53/100. Did you know Children of a Lesser God was filmed in my hometown? Fun fact! So many flicks I love on that list but also so many flicks I am now too old to accurately remember whether I *actually* saw them or not. 🤣 4d
dabbe @TheLudicReader How cool is that? Is your hometown not St. John? I loved that movie, though I read that Hurt was an unbelievable jerk to Marlee Matlin while in a relationship with her. And I say if you wondered, you saw it! Thanks for playing and sharing. 📽️🍿🎬 4d
TheLudicReader @dabbe, I am not sure I understand your question about St. John. 🤣 My hometown is Saint John (as you know). St. John's is in Newfoundland. But Children of a Lesser God was filmed here in the 80s. 4d
dabbe @TheLudicReader I learn something new every day. 😊 I had no idea that St. was always spelled out. Now I know, thanks to you! I guess it threw me when you said just “hometown“, so I thought that maybe you grew up somewhere else in Canada besides Saint John. No excuse for me not knowing--except that I am more forgetful these days. (edited) 4d

@Eggs
@Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks

A captivating anthology that brings together an extraordinary collection of correspondence from across history, culture, and human experience. Originally stemming from the popular website of the same name, this book compiles letters that are poignant, humorous, enlightening, and sometimes heartbreaking—each offering a unique glimpse into the minds of their writers.

BooksandCoffee4Me Have you read The Only Thing That Counts, the letters between Hemingway and his editor, Maxwell Perkins? These letters share insights into Hemingway -- the real, unheroic, determined, obstinate, fiery, pensive, colliegial Hemingway; of course, the wisdom, almost father-like attention, and expertise of Perkins and discussions regarding F Scott Fitzgerald add to the depth and enjoyment of reading this book. 6d

#ChristiesCapers @Librarybelle
A classic whodunit that shines in its puzzle-like structure, with multiple suspects, red herrings, and a tightly woven mystery. The investigation takes several twists, including a love triangle, hidden identities, and a second murder, and the clues are fairly presented to the reader. Poirot shines with his meticulous reasoning and playful ego, contrasting with Hastings‘ more emotional and sometimes naive perspective.

Bookwomble Oh, I listened to Hugh Bonneville narrating this one earlier in the week. I like this story 😊 2w
Bookwomble I think Holmes had Cadogan-West down for it initially, to his evident disappointment as he expressed increasing regret that the evidence was stacking against him. Once he had ruled him out, I think Johnson, the senior clerk, was next on his list. His failure to consider that a member of the aristocratic family of Sir James Walter was the culprit is an example, I think, of Holmes's class prejudice. 2w
Bookwomble As for the lax security, Imperial arrogance and an assumption of security and inviolability? Who, actually, would have the effrontery to trespass into the sacred groves of Empire? I guess today we might call it privilege 2w
See All 12 Comments
Librarybelle Completely agree on both counts, @Bookwomble . It‘s also good to see that Holmes is actually human and does think incorrectly from time to time. 2w
dabbe @Bookwomble True, Johnson would be the logical choice. Still, there is nothing in particular to make one suspect Johnson. He's only in one scene, and says and does nothing to make anyone suspicious of him. Perhaps Doyle should have made him more suspicious to the reader--at least this one! 🤩 1w
dabbe @Librarybelle @Bookwomble And that he does have the humility to admit it, even calling himself an “ass!“ 🤣 1w
dabbe @Librarybelle @Bookwomble I also am left wondering this: why did Oberstein leave copies of the agony ads lying about? He seemed to have destroyed all of the other evidence. Did he forget about them? Was he planning to use them and come back to blackmail Valentine later? It seems unbelievably sloppy (and lucky for Holmes). 1w
Bookwomble I guess Oberstein is no Moriarty! 1w
eeclayton Well they did have 3 keys, then again, there's a mention of Sir James having kept the 3 keys on the same ring, if I'm not mistaken 🤦
I was wondering about his death, too, I don't think it's ever explained. Suicide? Accident? Knowing who the culprit was in the main case, could he have a hand in it?
1w
dabbe @eeclayton Ooh, excellent observation! What if James told his brother he was onto him; then, the Colonel could have killed him to quiet him. And, how do we truly know Sir James is dead? We don't see a body, and the only person who tells us he's dead is the bad guy! 1w

Librarybelle I thought Mycroft‘s comparison of himself to Holmes was interesting—sure, he could solve the crime too, but Holmes is better at ferreting out the truth by visiting locations and talking to people. Imagine those dinner time conversations growing up! 😂 2w
dabbe @Librarybelle Mycroft may be superior in intellect (even Sherlock has stated this), but Sherlock has grit and mettle to add to his capability in solving a case. Mycroft might be the British government at times, But Holmes is the detective I would want on my case. 🤣 1w
Librarybelle Me too, @dabbe ! 😂 1w
Read4life I did like having more of Mycroft in this one. Sherlock is humble when he speaks of Mycroft‘s superior intellect & Mycroft praises Sherlock in a way that is very cerebral vs the way praise is heaped on him by detectives & clients. 1w
dabbe @Read4life 🎯! You know when Mycroft praises Sherlock, it's probably the highest praise given--since he's supposedly even smarter than his bro. 1w

Bookwomble Given his previous experiences in such cases, Holmes might have had more regard for the family members of the principles that first came to his notice. The laxity of security seems curious, until you remember the relatively recent instances of heads of state communicating on insecure channels or storing government secrets in the toilets of their holiday homes 🗃️🚽 🧐 2w
TheLudicReader I tell my students 3 is a magic number in writing all the time. 🤓 2w

Librarybelle Yes, @Bookwomble —thinking of security and then the current era of “security” of state secrets. Also, the threats from the East are still threats today. 2w
dabbe @Librarybelle @Bookwombile Interesting to also note that in every one of these so-called espionages, all of the criminals were family members! And in all three stories, it was only blind luck that kept these documents from being leaked or getting into the wrong hands. 1w
Bookwomble @Librarybelle @dabbe Subverting an insider is probably a more common tool of espionage than the high jinks of Mission Impossible. 1w
dabbe @Bookwomble 🎯, especially if said insiders are in desperate need of cold, hard, cash. 1w
Bookwomble @dabbe In debt and susceptible to blackmail for their indiscretions! 🧐 1w

Bookwomble I like this story, despite Doyle's typical slapdash approach to certain details. As a storyteller, he's more concerned with atmosphere than accuracy, and what would we have to talk about were it otherwise? 😁 2w
Daisey I enjoyed this one! 2w
Librarybelle This was a good one! 2w
See All 15 Comments
dabbe @Bookwomble Oh, I think atmosphere is so much fun to talk about! In this one, what about the dense fog? Its yellow oils dripping on the window! And would we even have this mystery without it? To me, it was the main character! 🤩 1w
dabbe @Daisey @Librarybelle Yay! I did, too! The body on the train scene reminded me of the film noir from the 40s, DOUBLE INDEMNITY. If you like those kind of movies, you should see it. It's INCREDIBLE! 🤩 1w
Read4life I agree that this was a good one. I could “feel” the fog not just “see” it. 1w
Bookwomble The yellowness and oily quality of the fog tells us that it was actually smog, a poisonous brew of hydrocarbon fumes from millions of coal fires and steam-powered engines supported by a global empire that provided some with great affluence, but which fueled the international conflicts of which espionage was an aspect. No empire, no global war, no military-industrial complex, no submarine plans, no murder, no case for Holmes to investigate. 👇 1w
Bookwomble The smog is a metaphor for the rot at the heart of empire, though I'm certain Doyle didn't intend it as such. 1w
eeclayton I enjoyed this story and agree that the fog added an eerie and sinister atmosphere. 1w
dabbe @Bookwomble Why are you so certain? Inquiring minds are dying to know! 1w
dabbe @eeclayton The atmosphere totally reminded me of DR. JEKYLL AND MR. HYDE, too! 1w
Bookwomble @dabbe Doyle was a supporter of empire, and Holmes's death at Reichenbach was retconned as The Great Hiatus, during which The Great Detective was involved in the Great Game of espionage and political intrigue between the British and Russian empires. Holmes often intervenes on the side of Establishment figures, and at times his respected brother IS the Government, which means he is also the Empire! IRL, Doyle defended British atrocities in the 👇 1w
Bookwomble ... Boer War, and supported involvement in WWI on political and anti-German grounds. He wasn't above criticising some colonial actions, but I think due to how implemented rather than in objection to the enterprise. 1w
Bookwomble @Dabbe If you've not read it, I'd recommend Jack London's book, The People of the Abyss as a view into the reality of Holmes's city. He lived in the slums of London for a couple of months to gather materials on the lives of people living in poverty at the heart of empire in 1903. It's a shocking indictment of the then most affluent nation, & so offended the British establishment that London was thrown out of the country and banned from returning. 1w
dabbe @Bookwomble #stacked! Thanks for sharing this info! 1w
