I Promessi Sposi (The Betrothed)
I Promessi Sposi (The Betrothed) | Alessandro Manzoni
4 posts | 7 read | 1 to read
"Set in Lombardy during the Spanish occupation of the late 1620s, The Betrothed tells the story of two young lovers, Renzo and Lucia, prevented from marrying by the petty tyrant Don Rodrigo, who desires Lucia for himself. Forced to flee, they are then cruelly separated, and must face many dangers including plague, famine and imprisonment, and confront a variety of strange characters the mysterious Nun of Monza, the fiery Father Cristoforo and the sinister Unnamed' in their struggle to be reunited. A vigorous portrayal of enduring passion, The Betrothed's exploration of love, power and faith presents a whirling panorama of seventeenth-century Italian life and is one of the greatest European historical novels." -- from amazon.com.

Pickpick

While I was reading these pages, I understood why the classics are immortal. This period was the best time to read this novel because of the similar conditions between #COVID-19 and plague.

Mentre leggevo queste pagine, ho capito perché i classici sono immortali. Questo periodo è stato il miglior tempo per leggere questo romanzo viste le simili condizioni tra il COVID-19 e la peste.

ale.giannoccolo I read this book for the first time when I was 15 because it is an Italian classic in the Italian school plane. But maybe I was too young to appreciate and I don‘t like read when somebody else forced me to do. However, I love this novel: it‘s brilliant and present even if it was written in 1800. I want to read Decameron, too. 4y
