pickThis was a 5* read which begins in haarlem at the very end of ww2 as a collaborator is murdered by the resistance, but whose body is moved to the doorstep of 13 yr old anton's family home . The consequences of this event and act become the subject of the book stretching through the subsequent 40 yrs. The story reflects on the effects of war on all involved and was brilliantly told with memorable characters and unexpected ending which was perfect.

The thread book is a second hand one i ordered on eBay this morning as a book i have wanted to read for ages so plan in September - the pile are those i purchased in August - as if i need any more books - i hope to read a few especially the one set in Cape verde to get me nearly at 100 countries visited in books
pickMulisch gives a great insight into how war affects the ones that experience it but also what it does to the following generations. How each individual (directly or indirectly) deals with the consequences, the reasons behind attitudes and actions seen from different perspectives. Oh and I love how the psychology of Anton develops throughout years. This is a must-read. One of those (Dutch) classics that's high up on the list.
