Gorilla and the Bird
Gorilla and the Bird: A Memoir | Zack McDermott
6 posts | 8 read | 25 to read
The story of a young man fighting to recover from a devastating psychotic break and the mother who refuses to give up on him 25-year-old Zack McDermott wakes up one morning convinced he is being filmed, Truman Show-style, for a TV pilot. After a manic spree around Manhattan, Zack, who is bipolar, is arrested and admitted to Bellevue Hospital. So begins Zack's freefall into psychosis and his desperate, poignant, often darkly funny struggle to claw his way back to sanity. His co-pilot on this journey - which will land him in prison-like mental wards and take him back to his Kansas roots - is his tough, big-hearted Midwestern mother, nicknamed the Bird, whose fierce and steadfast love might be the one thing that can help Zack find his way back to himself. Written with raw honesty, humor, and tenderness, GORILLA AND THE BIRD is a moving portrait of a powerful mother-son bond.

I picked this book for personal reasons but to be completely honest Bird is by far MORE interesting than Gorilla. She is endearing and I just loved her and you can tell he loves her by the way he writes her bc this book is autobiographical. While you learn a lot from and about Gorilla, it is his mother and her spirit that really steal the show. She really saved the book for me.

A well-written memoir about a man with Bipolar 1 disorder, and his incredibly patient and supportive mother. I work as a RN on psychiatric unit. The difference in responses to a mentally ill family member is fascinating. I commend the author for presenting an honest picture of his illness. Thank you 🦍

Bookmarkie This is the book that I plan to read for the PopSugar challenge prompt, Book About Mental Health. I'm glad to see your recommendation. 6y

Wonderful, yet difficult, true story of Zack, the author, diagnosed with Bi-Polar. Though sometimes tough to read, is also enjoyable. As though a good friend were opening up to me about his deepest struggles and thoughts. I think everyone needs to read this! Almost all of us know, at least intellectually, how common mental illness is. But this book helps the reader cross into actually beginning to understand the person behind the illness. Love it

What an intriguing memoir! Many of those with mental health illness are written off. This memoir is an excellent narrative on the unexpected onset of a mental health issue. The author is well-educated and a practicing lawyer and his description of how his life changed was a beautiful story on how to live life in spite of challenges. #memoir #stopthestigma #overcome #brooklyn

So I googled some non-fictions on bipolar disorder, depression and the use of #lithium and came across this book. “A captivating and witty memoir about a young lawyer's gut-wrenching struggle with mental illness and the fierce, protective love of his remarkable mother and dedicated friends..”
Sounds good.

Tamra Have you read Gruchow? It too is nonfiction and a slim glimpse into mental illness & the health system. Eye-opening & heartbreaking. Not a spoiler bc it's not in the book, but he later commits suicide. Knowing that makes the read all the more poignant. I think he was manic depressive. As the title suggests, it's epistolary.
