Doves: Love in Los Angeles | Erin McRae and Racheline Maltese
9 posts | 3 read
J. Alex Cook never wanted to be famous, he just wanted to get out of Indiana. Now two years after the events of Starling, Hollywoods brightest star is living happily ever after with his boyfriend, television writer Paul Marion Keane. But when Pauls pilot, Winsome, AZ, gets picked up, the competing demands of their high-profile careers make them question their future together. As Paul becomes increasingly absent from their relationship, Alex tries to regain control of his private life and establish a career path independent of Fourths enigmatic, and at times malevolent, showrunner Victor. But the delicate web of relationships that connects Alex, Paul, and their friends including Alexs excitable ex-lover Liam and his no-nonsense fiance Carly threatens to unravel. With the business of Hollywood making it hard to remember who he is when the whole world isnt watching, Alex is forced to confront major changes in the fairy tale life he never wanted as he discovers that love in Los Angeles often looks nothing like the movies. Please be aware, this is a high-heat, high-angst romance and includes characters with a past history of self-harm. This title was previously published by Torquere Press. This is a newly updated and revised edition. Doves is book two in the Love in Los Angeles series.

Pickpick

DOVES is very much concerned with Hollywood politics, with personality clashes, and with the ways fame and success impact relationships of all kinds. The pacing‘s a little off in places, but McRae and Maltese bombard the reader with so many tense, emotional moments that I can‘t even mind. I never tired of these characters with their realistically messy romances, their unconventional friendships, and their fascinating careers. Bring on Book Three.

It‘s killing me how I don‘t have time to binge read DOVES. The first book, STARLING, was really good, if oddly paced, but this one blows it away. I‘ve got my fingers crossed I can really dig into it after tonight‘s party.

Sparse #weeklyforecast this time around, since I dunno what I‘m in the mood for. I‘ve already quick-bailed on one Christmas romance today, so all I‘ll commit to is:

• DOVES by McRae & Maltese, from my unread 2019 purchases stash
• three volumes of TO YOUR ETERNITY. Maybe more, but definitely these three.
• the rest of THE RAVEN BOYS on audio

I‘m sure I WILL read at least one more novel, but don‘t ask me what it‘ll be.

Cinfhen This time of year is hard to concentrate on “older” books 5y
xicanti @Cinfhen I hesitated over whether to respond, since I might have misinterpreted your comment and I don‘t want to start fights on Litsy, but that “older” hurts. I don‘t feel I‘ve made immature or unworthy reading choices because I haven‘t committed to any litfic or nonfiction this week. I know many Littens regard anything genre and/or YA that way, but it felt awful to find it in my mentions. 5y
Cinfhen No, I meant books that have been lingering on our shelves. Nothing at all to do with the reading content or genres. Sorry if my comment inadvertently offended you. That was obviously not my intention at all 5y
xicanti @Cinfhen thanks for the clarification. I was struggling to read “older” as anything other than “mature/prestigious.” 5y

SO good. If Starling was the appetizer, then this is the rich, savory main course. Everything is deeper here: relationships, risks and rewards, pain, fun. I won‘t lie, these books aren‘t always pretty, but MY GOD the feelings. I‘m pretty sure the reason I‘ve been snappish at my partner today is that she won‘t just leave me alone and let me read.

Two more books. And yes, I‘ll be live-blogging them both. Sorry, not sorry.

It‘s supposed to be Alex and Paul‘s story, really. But Victor . . . I keep finding passages like this and maybe it‘s his story after all?

It‘s official, I love Victor. And I love that he has such a fondness for Alex, and that Alex is alternately amused and vaguely unnerved by this.

It‘s a bad air quality day, I‘m tired from a bunch of busy days, and I have absolutely nothing to do but immerse myself further into this wonderful universe for the entire day.

If you like a primary M/M romance with an ace, bi, and poly supporting cast, boys being stupid, accidental fame, found family and created family, and actually seeing the work of relationships, these are your books. And the first one, Starling, is discounted this week.
