Unspeakable Things
Unspeakable Things: Sex, Lies and Revolution | Laurie Penny
Shortlisted for the Green Carnation Prize 2014 Smart, clear-eyed, and irreverent, Unspeakable Things is a fresh look at gender and power in the twenty-first century, which asks difficult questions about dissent and desire, money and masculinity, sexual violence, menial work, mental health, queer politics, and the Internet. Celebrated journalist and activist Laurie Penny draws on a broad history of feminist thought and her own experience in radical subcultures in America and Britain to take on cultural phenomena from economic justice and the Occupy movement to online dating and freedom of speech. Unspeakable Things is a book that is eye-opening not only in the critique it provides, but also in the alternatives it imagines.

Laurie Penny rips the gloves off and shows how patriarchy is all about controlling women. Here she focuses on the modern era, bringing all the complexities of the digital age into the discussion. She gets a little off topic in the final chapter, but overall, this is terrific.

This book is such a relentless outpouring of anger, but she writes so well of all the things we have to be angry about.

Laurie Penny calls for mutiny. I am so with her.

YAS LAURIE PENNY! Unspeakable Things is such a thought-provoking masterpiece. This book made me want to be back in school so I would have a justifiable reason to write essays about it. Five stars all the way ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

"Here are the worst things you can call a woman: ugly. Slutty. Fat. Bitter. Bitch. Cunt. The worst thing anyone can say to a woman, in short, is that she doesn't please you. We must get used to giving the answer: is that all you've got?"

Laurie Penny was a big inspiration for my thesis and so it kills me that I'm just now starting this. Very exciting.
