I received a surprise Halloween gift from the generous and sweet @erzascarletbookgasm. I'm so touched by this gesture! Thank you, J. I swear you're a bookish gift Jedi because I've always wanted to read Oates and Gunesekera but I don't think I've mentioned it on Litsy? 🙌 The Hollinghurst, a modern Middlemarch? Yes please. And I *love* the monster pen! 😁 Thank you so much, this was unexpected and just wonderful 😘💜

Four dark and delicious stories about dysfunctional love -- every bit as good as those by one of my favorite short story authors, Kelly Luce.

Pickpick

The first three novellas in this collection are memorable for numerous reasons. Power dynamics in relationships and gender expectations figures prominently. The third novella "The Execution," is the only one of the four about familial & not romantic love. It is one of the most deeply unsettling novellas I've ever read. The final novella, "The Flatbed" is the shortest & it feels like more of a sketch for a novella. I have been in the mood for ?

vivastory Novellas lately. This collection is disturbing and well-written. Did not disappoint. 8y
saresmoore Ooh, disturbing, well-written novellas? Sold! 8y
vivastory @saresmoore Very disturbing, but none of the violence ever felt gratuitous. This was the first Oates I've ever read. 8y

saresmoore I haven't read Oates before. And your extra warning does make me a wee bit nervous. Ha! Are we talking sleep with the lights on disturbing or question the future of the human race disturbing? Because the latter I can dig. 8y
erzascarletbookgasm I recently acquired this. Good to know, sounds good! 8y
vivastory @saresmoore I don't think it will make you question the future of the human race more than you already do. It's told in third person, but Oates really gets into the mindset of the murderer. It's like a twisted true crime documentary 8y
batsy @saresmoore @vivastory That's what I was going to say! I'm really into novellas lately too, especially disturbing novellas #inthemoodtobedisturbed 8y
vivastory @batsy They're an interesting form. I've heard great things about 8y
vivastory @saresmoore I think you'd also like ☝ 8y
batsy @vivastory Thanks for mentioning Revenge, I've been meaning to check it out. I've read Diving Pool, found it quite uneven but good. I prefer Hotel Iris, very disturbing 8y
vivastory @batsy I completely forgot about Hotel Iris. I've been wanting to read it. I'll add that to my expanding list of books to check out at the library later 8y
saresmoore @vivastory @batsy I feel a disturbing book binge coming on. Tinfoil hats for everyone! 8y
Scurvygirl Oates does disturbing surprisingly well. 8y

I'm tired of listening to music on my commute. Figured this looked like a good read for the spooky season 👻
