My Secret Life in Hut Six
My Secret Life in Hut Six: One woman's experiences at Bletchley Park | Mair Russell-Jones, Gethin Russell-Jones
3 posts | 2 read | 2 to read
The story of the World War 2 de-coders of Bletchley Park continues to fascinate many. How did Mair Thomas, brought up in the Welsh valleys and a musician, find herself in the rarefied atmosphere of Hut Six, surrounded by hundreds of others, all desperately trying to break the German Enigma Code? How did she cope? What was it like? Sworn to secrecy and working in cramped and uncomfortable conditions, Mair discovered her degree in German and Music was just what was needed. But her background was very different to that of most of her colleagues, drawn from the public schools and Oxbridge. How did she manage, and what relationships did she build? This book gives a fascinating insight into one woman's battle and vividly captures an era of danger, strain - and day to day difficulties, brightened occasionally by visits from the top brass, including Churchill.

Mehso-so

I picked this up as it is a kind of oral history by Mair Russell-Jones about her life including her time at Bletchley Park with background and context provided by her son.
I was fascinated with Bletchley Park, but less enthusiastic about Mair herself who felt increasingly judgmental and at times unpleasant. I respect her convictions and her work, but found I didn't want to spend much page time with her.

Pickpick

Worth reading if you're interested in the codebreakers of Bletchley Park, especially the women. I also loved that Mair was Welsh. This book is written by her son Gethin, with abundant quotes from Mair.

I'm out of town this weekend so had to prepare my monthly TBR shot in a slightly different way. I have so many library books out that they won't all fit on my shelf. The three in the bottom corner are due sooner, so I need to read them first. On the shelf I really want to read this memoir of a WW2 codebreaker at Bletchley Park.
