“Yes Garmann I'm scared of leaving you. But the big garden could be exciting.“ This is a quote from one of Garmann's great aunts talking about death. This highlights the main themes of the book very well. It's okay to be fearful, and there is ways to make our fears less scary.
I really like the way Hole writes. The topics he talks about are somewhat mature and complex, but writes in a way that resonates with children. The main message of this book is it's okay to be afraid sometimes and how to deal with those feelings. I think this would be a good book to read to a child who seems to have a lot of anxiety.
pickGarmann's Summer by Stian Hole, 2006. Erza Jack Keats Award. I found this book to be very unique and profound. This book is about dealing with fears, and how fears change as we age. The book focuses on Garmann, who is worried about starting school. He talks to his great aunts, mom, and dad and find out they all have fears too. The illustrations are very unique, each page is a collage of realistic photos.
Farman asks, “Were you ever a child?” Auntie borghild then says “Yes, a hundred and fifty years ago.”
panI would say the quality of the book and pages is good so I would consider it a good picture book. The illustrations are very detailed. But I would never show children this book.
