“George loves words”
the mood this page sets for the story
This story is an honest yet child friendly depiction that celebrates a black man without forgetting the trauma he was enduring.
George was determined to learn how to read.
Beautiful story about the life and accomplishments of George Moses Horton.
Biography: Beautiful story of how George Moses Horton taught himself to read and then became a poet. He was a slave that worked hard and worked harder until he he inspired change.
I like this book tell a true story in a fun and engaging way. I like the pictures that are in are illustrated.
This book is about the life of George Moses Horton and how he became the African American to publish in the South and protested slavery by poetry.
I had never heard of George Moses Horton prior to this book, and his story really is remarkable. A salve who surreptitiously learns to read and write, who earns money with his poetry, and buys time away from his master, but remains enslaved until slavery was outlawed. The illustrations are not really my style, but are well done, but my big critique is that more examples of Horton‘s poetry should have been used in the book.
Telling the story of a famous slave poet, Tate handles the topic of slavery with the delicacy of a master storyteller & illustrator. I think this is an amazing #nonfiction #picturebook to introduce children to the topic of slavery while also showing one man's struggles and success during and after this period of American history.
