What-the-Dickens
What-the-Dickens: The Story of a Rogue Tooth Fairy | Gregory Maguire
6 posts | 22 read | 10 to read
A terrible storm is raging, and ten-year-old Dinah is huddled by candlelight with her brother, sister, and cousin Gage, who is telling a very unusual tale. Its the story of What-the-Dickens, a newly hatched orphan creature who finds he has an attraction to teeth, a crush on a cat named McCavity, and a penchant for getting into trouble. One day he happens upon a feisty girl skibberee who is working as an Agent of Change -- trading coins for teeth -- and learns that there is a dutiful tribe of skibbereen (call them tooth fairies) to which he hopes to belong. As his tale of discovery unfolds, however, both What-the- Dickens and Dinah come to see that the world is both richer and less sure than they ever imagined.

Mehso-so

I read this a while ago and forgot to review it...🤷🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️ Anyway, I‘m only picking so-so because I wasn‘t emotionally invested in the characters. I‘m not sure if it was just me or the book, honestly... I really enjoyed the fairy world and really wanted to know more but was left a bit let down by the end. I love Maguire‘s work usually. This was just a miss this time, for me.

I was a big fan of Maguire‘s takes on Oz, so I picked up another of his novels. This one was just meh. The plot wasn‘t as tight as it could be, and devolved into a preachy, moralistic tone at the end, but without having any particularly compelling message. What-the-Dickens, a rogue tooth fairy, was a likable character. It was a mildly entertaining summer read.

#Septembowie Day 22: Each time I watch the international news, I go What The Dickens! and #ThisIsNotAmerica - at least, not the one that I know and love.

My coworker gave me Wicked and this book. I got annoyed by wicked and bailed on it, but this book is delightful. Whimsical and Gaiman-esque. I took it on vacation and left it in their #littlefreelibrary for someone else to enjoy. #junebookbugs
