A solid work on the conception of the ghetto from it‘s ancient origins through WWII to the present, particularly focused on how it relates to the plight and status of African Americans as seen through the work and writings of a handful of notable social scientists. Pickpick

Interesting and important history of an idea that's been around for more than 500 years, for most of that time associated with Jews. Author focuses on the 20th century scholars who have reckoned with the concept in different ways to try to understand the plight of African Americans in US cities. Some key insights but no real breakthrough or through line here. Its value is mostly as history of a now largely ignored (among the public) phenomenon.
