4 posts | 7 read | 2 to read
#1 New York Times best-selling author and National Book Award nominee Gene Luen Yang continues his work at DC with NEW SUPER-MAN VOL. 1, a part of DC Universe Rebirth! An impulsive act of heroism thrusts an arrogant young man into the limelight of Shanghai as China begins to form its own Justice League of powerful heroes. As the government creates their own Superman, will they live to regret the person they've chosen? Rising from the ashes of SUPERMAN: THE FINAL DAYS OF SUPERMAN and the death of the Man of Steel, will this New Super-Man step up to the challenge, or be crushed under the weight of his hubris and inexperience? Award-winning writer Gene Luen Yang (American Born Chinese, SUPERMAN) and on-the-rise art star Viktor Bogdanovic (BATMAN: ARKHAM KNIGHT) introduce readers to Kong Kenan, an all-new superhero who could change the world...or be the end of it, in NEW SUPER-MAN VOL. 1. Collects issues #1-6.

This was way deeper than I expected. Yang and Bogdanovic use their newly-empowered teenage protagonist to question who's a hero, who's a villain, and how a person might switch from one side to the other. It's good stuff and I'll keep an eye out for future volumes.

A solid week of releases, tho nothing too mind blowing. #comicsrecs #comicseller
👇individual notes and ratings below👇

nosferatoos 👍Avengers 680: still a solid event. I haven‘t read an Avengers comic since Hickman and this has a very Hickman-lite feel, which isn‘t actually a bad thing. 7y
nosferatoos 👍Captain America 698: after three issues of nothing really happening, the 4th issue of Waid/Samnee‘s run finally seems to have found its footing. (edited) 7y
nosferatoos 👋Cold War 1: I really like Christopher Sebela, he‘s definitely a creator I gravitate towards. And I have really loved a lot of Aftershocks stuff. This feels a little messy and hard to follow though. A lot of that is the art. I had a hard time telling characters apart. (edited) 7y

nosferatoos 👍Doctor Strange 385: I have REALLY enjoyed this story. Donny Cates was a good fit to take over this book (the vin diagram of Jason Aaron and Donny Cates interests and inspiration is just a circle) and I absolutely love Walta on art. I think this is Waltas last issue though and that is very upsetting. 7y
nosferatoos 👋Marvel Two-In-One: at the shop we joked that Jim Cheung, despite being hyped as the series artist, would be off the book by the 3rd issue and LO AND FUCKING BEHOLD... I‘m super tired of this whole bait-and-switch bullshit marvel and dc have been doing for the last few years. My biggest take away from this book is: being 👏 back 👏 the 👏 real 👏 f 👏 f 👏 (edited) 7y
nosferatoos 🙌 New Super-Man and the Justice League of China 20: I LOVE THIS BOOK. It‘s such a hard sell because everyone‘s knee jerk reaction is “oh why is super-man Chinese now dc is the PC police!” First of all, that whole line of reasoning is bad and wrong, second this book is absolutely not that and everyone should check it out. 7y
nosferatoos 👋Sideways 1: I am conflicted on this one. One one hand, Who let Dan Didio‘s 800 year old ass write a teenager? Who keeps letting all these middle aged men write teenagers in 2018 (👀 @ u 2 mark waid). On the other hand, I really love Rocafort‘s art. This is also the first of the “from the pages of Metal” books to actually reference DNM. Despite being an aesthetic rip off of Spider-Man, the first issue is actually pretty interesting. 7y
nosferatoos 👍Twisted Romance 2: This was really cute. Both stories this time around were really cute. The first had really adorable art and the second was all around adorable by one of my favorite creators, Meredith McClaren. I liked this more than the first issue. Hit me with all the bubblegum cute art. 7y
nosferatoos 👎Wonder Woman 40: the entire Silver Swan plot is so fucking stupid and I hate every single thing about it. Please have mercy on me and let this era of Wonder Woman comics end. Also stop letting James Robinson write comics. Starman is the only good thing he‘s ever written (it‘s like 20 years old) and I‘m starting to think that was 100% an accident. 7y

A strong intro to a new hero, and a fresh way of looking at the idea of Superman. It stands alongside John Rogers' BLUE BEETLE and G. Willow Wilson's MS. MARVEL asa fresh, engaging reinvention of the superhero coming of age story for a new time and new culture, helped ably by Viktor Bogdanovic's excellent design and Hi-Fi's vibrant colors. Not perfect, but a great intro to a textured character and interesting new part of the DCU.
