The Adventure of the Deadly Dimensions
The Adventure of the Deadly Dimensions: Cthulhu Vs. Sherlock 1 | Lois Gresh
5 posts | 4 read | 4 to read
A series of grisly murders rocks London. At each location, only a jumble of bones remains, along with a bizarre bone sphere covered in arcane symbols. The son of the latest victim seeks the help of Sherlock Holmes and Dr. John Watson, who discover a common thread that ties together the murders--and the persons responsible. Bizarre geometries--based on ancient schematics--point to members of a secluded cult. These men and women build strange constructs that will enable other-worldly creatures to enter our dimension, seeking sustenance. They are gaining so much power that even Moriarty fears that his empire is at risk--to the point that he seeks an unholy alliance with his eternal foe.

Disclosure: I haven't ever read HP Lovecraft. If I were an HPL fan, maybe my review would be different.

This book is chaotic, nonsensical, messy, and super gross. (I don't think I've ever read a book that features pus so prominently.) Early in the book, Holmes and Watson discuss how mathematicians aren't ever criminals. Yeah...except Moriarty is a mathematician. And he's mentioned several times in this book. I will not read the second one.

This is not a good book. I knew that before, but I was in the mood for something different. Unfortunately, Sherlock Holmes and Watson are shoehorned into the Lovecraft story. The little things don't add up. Watson and his wife live in a flat, not a house, without a single servant. I started the next one because I got it together with part one, but i don't have much hope for it. Fits the prompt lowest rating on Goodreads for the #SFFTBRChallenge.

Definitely a YMMV read. Plot's quite fun and I like the way Watson's written, but the two universes here just don't quite play together very well. Plus: this book doesn't question the racism and classism of the Cthulhu Mythos the way other novels do. And there's a lot more gore and rape than is appropriate for either universe. So yeah: YMMV, definitely.

I know this looks a little gimmicky (okay, a LOT gimmicky), but I can't help but be curious. How does Sherlock Holmes, whose entire peg in life is a Vulcan-level adherence to logic, address the utterly illogical Elder Gods? Only one way to find out!

Theresa Oh that sounds interesting! 7y
kammartinez @Theresa It does, doesn't it? I just wonder how Holmes will tackle the Elder Gods XD. 7y
