Almost a Woman: A Memoir | Esmeralda Santiago
1 post | 4 read | 3 to read
Following the enchanting story recounted in When I Was Puerto Rican of the authors emergence from the barrios of Brooklyn to the prestigious Performing Arts High School in Manhattan, Esmeralda Santiago delivers the tale of her young adulthood, where she continually strives to find a balance between becoming American and staying Puerto Rican. While translating for her mother Mami at the welfare office in the morning, starring as Cleopatra at New Yorks prestigious Performing Arts High School in the afternoons, and dancing salsa all night, she begins to defy her mothers protective rules, only to find that independence brings new dangers and dilemmas.

Day 7: I didn't have the same experiences Santiago did, but I was one of very few from a Latin family where I grew up, and then I was the American when my family moved to Ecuador. Growing up, I often felt like an outsider, and there were many things I had a hard time articulating about that which Santiago illustrates really well in her memoirs.
