A town named Plainview gets a visit from five mysterious strangers bearing a wagon full of gold, and they propose to the town that they start a lottery with the gold as the grand prize. The town hastily agrees, and that is the first in a series of bad mistakes. The lottery goes on for months without producing a single winner, yet the townspeople continue to buy tickets. A newspaper reporter named James Henderson is convinced that the lottery is a swindle, and he searches for the truth as he watches the town he loves succumb to lottery fever; however, he can't get the story out before the bubble bursts.
