This is a very simple nonfiction book. This story tells about how the slaves would run away to freedom and how terrifying it was. The color scheme of this book changes from blues to yellows as they become more uplifted and free. It is a simple and easy book to understand. There is also good information at the end of the book to continue the learning.
This would be a really good book for younger children when you talk about the Underground Railroad and slaves escaping. It is a hard topic to talk about but this book makes it simple.

They have to stay out of sight so they run through unlit woods. Sleep beneath bushes, take shelter in a kind strangers home. They are heading for freedom by way of the Underground Railroad.

Underground is a HF simple picture book that follows the story of a group of slaves who are trying to break free and make it north where they can be. It uses simple, simple sentences which lends it to be an excellent GR. It covers UDL 3.1, 7.2 and ESOL 14, and 27. The resource is for 5th up while the book is geared more towards emergent readers, however you can modify the lesson, or use the book as a jumping point for the main lesson.
