The Orphan Sky
The Orphan Sky | Ella Leya
3 posts | 6 read | 2 to read
Set at the crossroads of Turkish, Persian and Russian cultures under the red flag of Communism in the late 1970s, The Orphan Sky reveals one woman's struggle to reconcile her ideals with the corrupt world around her, and to decide whether to betray her country or her heart. Leila is a young classical pianist who dreams of winning international competitions and bringing awards to her beloved country Azerbaijan. She is also a proud daughter of the Communist Party. When she receives an assignment from her communist mentor to spy on a music shop suspected of traitorous Western influences, she does it eagerly, determined to prove her worth to the Party. But Leila didn't anticipate the complications of meeting Tahir, the rebellious painter who owns the music shop. His jazz recordings, abstract art, and subversive political opinions crack open the veneer of the world she's been living in. Just when she begins to fall in love with both the West and Tahir, her comrades force her to make an impossible choice.

Mehso-so

A young ardent communist Leila, 15 yo musical prodigy from a privileged communist family, fall in love with Tahir, free-spirited boy who likes to paint, listen jazz and strongly rejects communism. Fahrad, who is the rising star of communist party, and of corse he falls in love with Leila ... and the problems begin. Pick: rich presence and description of art, music, myths and legends from #Azerbaijan history. 👇🏻

Simona ... Pan: poor characterisation, the story simply falls apart, and as often happens in the stories about sacrifices - this story too becomes too melodramatic and soapy. 3y
Simona @BarbaraBB @Librarybelle #ReadingAsia I‘m also reading books set in countries that bridges Asia and Europe. 3y
BarbaraBB I read those countries last year for #ReadingEurope2020. If you need suggestions, let me know! 3y

Simona @BarbaraBB Thank you 🙏I will 🤗 3y
Simona @Librarybelle The beginning is really strong and captivating, but the second part was for me eye rolling 🤷‍♀️ 3y

Panpan

It started good before fading to fine. I finished it because I enjoyed to setting. I'd never read a book set in Baku or Azerbaijan before. Unfortunately, the setting didn't make up for characters who changed moods at the drop of a sentence.

I hate it when I can spot the point where the author's attention started to wander... And that point is two-thirds of the way through.
