Cole aboutit ŕ l'hôpital psychiatrique en prétendant arriver de l'an 2035. Sa mission: sauver l'humanité d'un virus mortel qui décimera toute la population. Une psychiatre le juge d'abord psychotique mais se laisse entraîner peu ŕ peu dans son aventure, les conduisant aux frontičres de l'esprit humain. Essayant de résoudre le mystčre des 12 singes, ils font la rencontre d'un déséquilibré et d'un homme de science réputé. Confronté ŕ un univers offrant bien peu de réponses, Cole va bientôt douter de sa raison.
