This book is a winner of the Coretta Scott King Award. This book is very interesting as well. It talks about the story of when a white man kills an African American with a rock and talks about all the violence involved.

I hate to give this book a So-So rating, but I have a couple reasons for it. I wanted to give it a Pick because I think this history needs to be told to everybody. The racial tensions, hate, and divisions have been around for far longer than 100 years. I just really didn't like the writing style of the author. In some places, it felt like I was reading a dystopian fiction (when she referred to groups as "the Refined" etc)...

WorldsOkayestStepMom But I felt like she spent way too much of the book building up the history of Chicago before the race riot in 1919 and then ended it too quickly when she finally started writing about it towards the end of the book. It very much read like a research paper written for an audience of people who knew about the riot itself, but not about its history. 4y

I wanted to like this, but it was such a struggle to get through. The content and topic were great, super intense and very informative, but oh man this was such a dry read. Even as someone who reads nonfiction regularly it read like a textbook which is why it took me so long to get through.
