This is a strange magical realism book that's about this kid, told from the perspective of the primary adults in his life as well as a fantastical bogeyman. I honestly don't have a very good description and can't quite explain to you why it works but it does. Excellent contender for the Booker.

I finished this in pretty much one sitting. I really enjoyed how this memoir was set up to mesh his fashion tips with his personal stuff. As a fellow desi queer, I related to and appreciated his discussions on mental health, colourism in the community, racism, etc. I also commend him for being very clear about the boundaries around his personal life, and that some things he wasn't going to put out publicly just for tragedy/pain porn consumption.

Compelling courtroom drama, and a raw portrayal of parents of disabled kids. However, I'm not at all comfortable with the way the disabled kids in the book were portrayed - more an assortment of symptoms than personhood.

Jeannineth I felt the same. I could also tell it was a debut novel. I will read more by her though. ⭐️⭐️⭐️ is my rating. 5mo

I was completely absorbed by this book - I really enjoyed how the author tied up the magical realism elements with the various character relationships. Kinda iffy about the step-sibling incest though.

A huge theme of this book is guilt, something that deeply resonated with me and my own history. The three sisters are deeply flawed and the adversities in their lives bring out the best and worst in them. The resolution of the novel isn't perfect, but it's an exercise to just get on the road to healing.

k.reads.5 Great review. I'm really looking forward to this one. 10mo

I think I would have been really into this book back when I didn't know a lot about feminism, but it was hard for me to be enamored by the whole white-woman-college-student-looks-upto-second-wave-feminist-mentor-and-is-grossly-misguided-in-her-idealism thing. I was actually more riveted by the arcs of a couple of the secondary characters. Also, the writing meandered a bit. Just wasn't for me.

I took a very laissez-faire approach to reading in 2018, and it taught me that I'm better off with goals and prompts. So this year I'm back to doing the @bookriot Read Harder, @thereadingwomen list, as well as a @goodreads goal.

The process of choosing the first book of the year is both enjoyable and tricky, and I finally settled on this much-talked about 2018 release.

Here's wishing all of you a fabulous reading year. Yay books! ✨
