Summer of the Monkeys
Summer of the Monkeys | Wilson Rawls
7 posts | 22 read | 7 to read
The last thing a fourteen-year-old boy expects to find along an old Ozark river bottom is a tree full of monkeys. Jay Berry Lee's grandpa had an explanation, of course--as he did for most things. The monkeys had escaped from a traveling circus, and there was a handsome reward in store for anyone who could catch them. Grandpa said there wasn't any animal that couldn't be caught somehow, and Jay Berry started out believing him . . . But by the end of the "summer of the monkeys," Jay Berry Lee had learned a lot more than he ever bargained for--and not just about monkeys. He learned about faith, and wishes coming true, and knowing what it is you really want. He even learned a little about growing up . . . This novel, set in rural Oklahoma around the turn of the century, is a heart-warming family story--full of rich detail and delightful characters--about a time and place when miracles were really the simplest of things... From the Trade Paperback edition.

MinDea I think I didn't like it as much as where the red fern grows, but it is OK if I remember...but been so long! 6y

Nute All good memories: sitting on the floor in a hidden corner of the library wondering if I could be undiscovered until the next morning, picking out books based on the cover shot in Scholastic Book Order Form, buying books for a quarter at sidewalk sales tables and my Grandma saying “you can chose four”... my response, ‘REALLY?‘ Lots of memories!😊 6y

BooksTeasAndBookishThings @Aleida It is so fragile, though, I love being able to protect it, I had a movie tie-in cover as well, but when it found that one I knew it was mine ❤️❤️❤️ 7y

My book from out #LitsyGoesPostalOG #blinddatewithabook exchange is cozying up with me on the couch this snowy Sunday afternoon. This thoughtful date brought tea and a bookmark to make this date extra special. It came with chocolate too but I may have already eaten that ☺️

My #LitsyGoesPostalOG #blinddatewithabook from @BooksTeasAndBookishThings cam today and holy moly is it awesome! I loved "Where the Red Fern Grows" as a child but I've never heard of this book so I'm excited to read it. Even better, it will be fun to pass along to my son in a few years to read with WTRFG. Luckily I'll have plenty of teas, hot cocoa, and chocolate to cozy up with because every date needs chocolate! ❤️

Okay. So, even though they are not monkeys they are apes (yes, I am one of those), this book was such a great read when I was in 4th grade. I highly recommend it to any adult who has not read it and to please let your kid read it if he/she has not. It always makes me happy sad.

wrenaymuhree Love teaching this book to my middle schoolers in ELA. A great read! Where the Red Fern Grows is even better! 8y
BooksTeasAndBookishThings Maybe it was my teacher that read it to us in 4th grade, but I always loved this one over WTRFG... This book and Voices After Midnight by Richard Peck are two that stuck with me from her class. 8y
