Second Bloom: Poems | Anya Krugovoy Silver
3 posts | 1 to read
In Second Bloom, Silver looks unflinchingly and honestly at the suffering of cancer, while at the same time celebrating the possibility of joy, the persistence of beauty and love, the simultaneous winnowing and comfort of faith. These poems are contemplative and often personal, but reach out to the world as a whole: from IV poles to hula hoops, from riding a roller coaster with ones son to comforting a dying friend at Christmas. The poems glean their subject matter from ordinary life, from art, from the natural world. Silvers poetry attempts to preserve the worlds luminous moments and to hold grace and despair simultaneously in the human heart.

Vansa
Second Bloom: Poems | Anya Krugovoy Silver

There‘s no doubt it‘s the most glamorous,
the one you reach for first—its luscious gloss.
Russian Roulette, First Dance, Apéritif, Cherry Pop.
For three days, your nails are a Ferris wheel,
a field of roses, a flashing neon Open sign.
Whatever you‘re wearing feels like a tight dress
and your hair tousles like Marilyn‘s on the beach.
But soon, after dishwashing, typing, mopping,

Vansa the chips begin, first at the very tips and edges
where you hardly notice, then whole shards.
Eventually, the fuss is too much to maintain.
Time to settle in to the neutral tones.
Baby‘s Breath, Curtain Call, Bone.

You will love this book if you like beautiful narrative poetry, thoughtful observations on daily life, and heartbreaking truths about living with metastatic breast cancer, which Anya does. We were grad school friends, and I experience more enjoyment reading her work than I ever did from reading a poem at Emory.
