Developing Readers in the Academic Disciplines
Developing Readers in the Academic Disciplines | Doug Buehl
3 posts | 1 read
Being literate in an academic discipline means more than simply being able to read and comprehend text; it means you can think, speak, and write as a historian, scientist, mathematician, or artist. Doug Buehl strips away the one-size-fits-all approach to content area literacy and presents a much-needed instructional model for disciplinary literacy, showing how to mentor middle and high school learners to become "academic insiders" who are college and career ready. This thoroughly revised second edition of Developing Readers in the Academic Disciplines shows how to help students adjust their thinking to comprehend a range of complex texts that fall outside their reading comfort zones. This book --a natural companion to Buehl's Classroom Strategies for Interactive Learning, which has been bolstering student comprehension for almost three decades--provides the following supports for teachers: Instructional tools that adapt generic literacy practices to discipline-specific variations Strategies for frontloading instruction to activate and build background knowledge New approaches for encouraging inquiry around disciplinary texts In-depth exploration of the role of argumentation in informational text Numerous examples from science, mathematics, history and social studies, English/language arts, and related arts to show you what vibrant learning looks like in various classroom settings Developing Readers in the Academic Disciplines introduces teachers from all disciplines to new kinds of thinking and, ultimately, teaching that helps students achieve new levels of understanding.

So I was sitting here feeling sorry for myself because my March reading totals are not great—certainly not as impressive as all the rest of you amazing friends, and I thought about how my Reading class took up so much of my time. Then I realized—I read this book! I actually read it cover to cover AND I enjoyed it (it is filled with brilliant literacy strategies). I have never before counted professional books in my reading totals, but I am now!

merelybookish Of course you should! 7y
AndreaReads @merelybookish Right!?! I don‘t know why I‘ve never considered it before? Maybe because I don‘t see my professional reading as reading—if that makes sense? Which seems totally ridiculous now that I think about it... 7y
ofbooksandme I count them! Everything I read for my PhD is there on Goodreads too. 7y

merelybookish @AndreaReads I do understand. But as you know if you're reading about reading strategies, we read for lots of different reasons! 😉 7y
AndreaReads @merelybookish 😂 Yes! That‘s what I tell my own students! I just need to follow my own advice. 🤦🏼‍♀️ 7y
GatheringBooks this looks great. will check whether our uni library has it. have you read the book whisperer or reading in the wild yet? 7y
AndreaReads @GatheringBooks I‘ve read The Book Whisperer (which is also on the book list for my next class session), but I‘ve never read Reading in the Wild, but I ordered it when I ordered my other “textbooks”! I‘m really excited to read it! I got to listen to Donalyn Miller at a conference once, and she was fabulous! 7y

Feeling a little like I'm back in college...I'm currently spread out on the floor working on homework for my reading endorsement late on a snowy Sunday night while my boys watch some Star Talk with Neil Degrasse Tyson. #TeachersofLitsy #NerdyHousehold

Kendyl @AndreaReads I have those pens! Love them! 😍 7y
hermyknee I want a reading endorsement! 7y
AndreaReads @hermyknee In Texas you're already endorsed (to an extent) it's the 'R' in ELAR, but in Utah its separate. I teach ELA, but to teach reading specific classes (outside the core) I need to have my reading endorsement. 🙄 I don't mind though because the hours are counted as graduate hours, so I'll get a a small pay raise. 7y

I am so sorry I've been absent this week--it was annoyingly busy, but tonight I started my first class for my reading endorsement! The highlight of the night was when the instructor listed several things that teachers should do to "make the classroom a reading space," and I was able to check every box! I'm looking forward to this course! Happy Reading, friends!
