King
King | Kader Abdolah
3 posts | 1 read | 2 to read
With this gleaming and seemingly simple story, breathlessly paced and beautifully told, Kader Abdolah, the acclaimed Iranian emigre novelist, speaks of deeper truths. A novel which has many timely things to say about eras of change and upheaval, The King is an unforgettable book.

Pickpick

The story of absolute monarch, Shah Naser, the first modern Persian king to visit Europe, his ultimately futile opposition to reform, combining with the interference of the British and Russian colonial empires to begin the rise to political power of the ayatollahs as populist representatives of an oppressed people. As we know from our daily news, none of this has ended well.
Generally engaging, with a couple of drier parts towards the end. 3.5⭐

Somewhat surreal, and also shitty, to be reading about British colonial interference in Afghanistan and Persia, and the Anglo-Persian War of 1852-53 centred around the city of Herat, when the consequences of that ongoing interference is being bloodily played out today ☹

Bookwomble Obviously, the Taliban is itself a force of evil, and Persia/Iran has its own deep history of Empire-building, but as a Briton I'm frequently appalled at our history, and the continual airbrushing to justify the atrocious acts committed by successive governments and the ruling classes. Sorry to doompost; I'll try to find something uplifting later 🙂 3y
saresmoore Well said. We are all just solemnly nodding along. 3y
Bookwomble @saresmoore It's disheartening. Although I don't agree with militarism, once you send your forces in you have a responsibility to ensure people in the area are safe. Once again, the West has abandoned those it said it was going in to protect ? On an entirely different note, I thought your tagline read "Set wide the window. Let me drink all day"! ?? 3y
saresmoore Ahaha! I suppose it depends on the day. 🙃 3y

I'm squandering the calories burnt on my morning walk on a rum, coke and Cointreau, but, hey! I put some fruit in, so that's a health drink now, yeah?
Just started The King, a historical novel about the 19th century Shah Naser of Persia. Early feels are good, so my hopes are high for an interesting story of court intrigue and the Great Game played by the colonial powers in the Middle East.
