Welcome to Daniel Boone Middle School in the 1970s, where teachers and coaches must hide who they are, and girls who like girls are forced to question their own choices. Presented in the voice of a premier storyteller, One True Way sheds exquisite light on what it means to be different, while at the same time being wholly true to oneself. Through the lives and influences of two girls, readers come to see that love is love is love. Set against the backdrop of history and politics that surrounded gay rights in the 1970s South, this novel is a thoughtful, eye-opening look at tolerance, acceptance, and change, and will widen the hearts of all readers.

Pickpick

A quick read, with surprising depth. I liked Allie‘s determination and her spunk, and that, like so many of us, she questions if it would be easier to live a lie. Her parents‘ openness read as a little unrealistic, as did a few of the situations, but that could be my reading as an adult who is jaded and knows too much of our history. A definite pick, it‘s good and a necessary book, and will matter a lot for the target audience.

Tonight‘s reading! My partner is switching to overnight dialysis, so it‘s going to be just me and the four-footers. Perfect time to snuggle in bed with a cup of tea and this, about queer middle schoolers in the 70‘s. I‘m excited, there are lots of new middle grade books with lgbt+ kids.
