Meatless Days
Meatless Days | Sara Suleri Goodyear, Sara Suleri
3 posts | 4 read | 4 to read
A remarkable writer offers a remarkable look at the violent history of Pakistan's independence with the author's most intimate memories--of her Welsh mother, an English teacher of spare, abstracted eloquence; of her Pakistani father, a prominent and frequently jailed political journalist; of her tenacious grandmother; and of the friends who accompany her own passage to the West. A profoundly moving literary work.

Pickpick

This is my favourite read of 2020 so far. The author‘s ability to tell her story and the heavy involvement of other characters in her life is quite outstanding

batsy I love her writing in this one ❤️ 4y
charl08 I usually love memoir but this one didn't click with me when I read it. Perhaps I should try again. 4y
misati @charl08 please try it again, with an open heart this time 4y

...I was pleased to have my mother lead me through those shelves and see the pleasure it conferred on her when she told me, contemplatively, 'Yes, now you're old enough to read Jane Austen.'

charl08 Mixed feelings about this one. Anyone else read it? 6y

I was looking at my shelves this morning when I realized that I have a lot of lavender books! This is just a sample. I have tons more! I‘ve always said I love green, but didn‘t realize how much I‘ve always been drawn to lighter shades of purple!

Zelma What a pretty stack! I love purple too; it usually ends up being my favorite color when pressed for a choice. 6y

batsy This is lovely! Lavender strikes me as a rare colour for book covers and it's wonderful to see a stack of them. 6y
EvieBee @Zelma The pressure when you have to name a color, right?! I think it‘s going to come to mind a lot quicker now. 🤓 6y
EvieBee @batsy That‘s what I was thinking, Batsy! When I saw all the spines staring back at me today I was so surprised! 6y
