Gratuitous Elwood photo. Not the worst book ever but it really missed the mark. Billed as hilarious satire, It wasn‘t funny and the satire wasn‘t sharp enough; it was too realistic and the goofy parts didn‘t go far enough. Something felt off and when I flipped to the author bio, I figured it out. This is an older white man‘s image of liberal Ivy League, taken up a notch, his desire to poke fun, and his wish for a return to how colleges used to be.

Sace Sorry you had a less than stellar reading experience. Thanks for the Elwood picture! 1mo

I haven‘t been on Litsy this week due to grief. After a sudden and fast illness, we said goodbye to Doggie. He was abandoned in our yard two years ago and we gave him a home and loved him so much. He thought he was a cat most the time, loved his fluffy blankets and stuffed squirrel, and was a wonderful, goofy, energetic addition to our home. We don‘t have kids so our pets are truly our babies and we‘re heartbroken.

Trying to catch up on old reviews. This book was a lot of fun - breezy, informative, gossipy but not mean. The book looks at staff experiences in White House residence for the Kennedy administration through the Obama administration. Each chapter is a different facet of staff life or values (like discretion or loyalty) and includes stories from all of those presidencies. Continued below.

Zelma It doesn‘t get too scandalous because staffers are so discreet. But retired staffers do tell some fun stories, especially from earlier administrations. Favorite families are definitely the Bushes (especially George and Barbara). And a really interesting chapter shows the Kennedy assassination from the staff‘s POV. 3mo

Noooo. I couldn‘t keep reading this one. Negative and depressing, being inside the main characters‘ heads was not where I want to be right now. They hated themselves, kept insisting how fat and undesirable they were, and suffered emotional abuse from family and themselves. Finished this last night with these two snuggly cuties. Enjoyable slice of life book set in the fairy tale world. What happens to the inhabitants of a town or castle after Happily Ever After? This tells that story through anecdotes and glimpses at the new residents of the Castle. Light on plot but I enjoyed spending time with these characters.

Wow, I enjoyed the heck out of this. I had the read Locke & Key but none of Hill‘s novels. It certainly reminded me of Stephen King but didn‘t feel like a retread; Hill does his own thing and is successful. Well-written, great atmosphere, creepy as hell. I‘m a sucker for memoirs where the author does something new for a year and writes about it. This one wasn‘t bad and the author‘s voice was appropriately chatty. However, I ended up feeling like the author wasn‘t addressing problems of introversion as much as her shyness. Doing an improv class, stand-up comedy, speaking in public, talking to strangers - all of these fears faced her embarrassment and shyness, not necessarily introversion.

I decided quite awhile ago that, though I love Neil Gaiman as a person, his books aren‘t my thing. So why did 8 have a burning need al of sudden to re-read American Gods? It was like a serious food craving.

Patchshank I think even if you don't like Neil Gaiman, there is a certain appreciation for Neverwhere and American Gods. It's just what I've observed. I'm a Neil Gaiman fan and like almost everything he's done. Stardust has been the only thing I haven't really liked. 5mo

Summer Reading is here and I am exhausted. Looking forward to my one day off this week, drinking coffee in my new Natl Parks mug and reading a easy teen thriller. But on the plus side, library events have been a success. One week in and we had 397 participants at our programs. If the numbers reflected our usual attendee from the school year, we only expected about 150. 😱😃💪

Severnmeadows Envious of your National Parks mug 😊 5mo
Zelma @Severnmeadows the back says Get Stamped. It‘s pretty cool. 😆 5mo
Susannah I love getting National Park stamps! I‘ve had my passport since 1993. 👵🏼 I‘ve never seen that mug before, though. It‘s great. (edited) 5mo

Zelma @Susannah my folks found it recently and surprised Mr. Z with it. I‘ll ask where they got it. 5mo
kspenmoll @Susannah my son has bern getting passport stamps since he was young. Such fun! 5mo
Susannah @kspenmoll it‘s still really fun, though I barely get to national parks anymore since I‘ve moved to California. When I lived in Mississippi, there were a lot of them very close together. California, less so. 😉 5mo

Pickpick

There isn‘t anything new to say about this one, as so many Littens have already read it. However, this was so up my alley and I just loved it. There were a few too many coincidences and ways the characters crossed paths, but I still enjoyed being in this world for awhile and living with these particular characters. It made me smile, cry, and feel lots of emotions, and I was sad to move on to a different book after. It rarely gets better than that.

JanuarieTimewalker13 My fave of the year, thus far, and one of my faves of all time. 5mo

Well, summer is here. I may collapse before the end of summer reading as I‘m already tired but it‘s still a lot of fun. I love my job and how different it is every day. Here I am on the news with my space helmet; we‘re making them next week for our Astronaut Training Camp program.

cathysaid OMG the ADORABLE-NESS ❤ 6mo

Zelma @cathysaid @JSW thanks! It was a big hit at all the stations. Everyone there, even newscasters, tried it on and took photos. (edited) 6mo
