The funniest, cleverest and most entertaining part of this collection are those poems from Duffy‘s collection called The World‘s Wife (pub 1999). I‘m tempted to buy this collection of poems from the perspective of wives of famous mythic and historical heroes or female versions of the heroes themselves. If you only have time to read some of Duffy‘s poems read these, choose a famous historical male or female and see if she‘s written a poem for it.

Mrs Midas, what a fabulous poem on the perils of desiring gold, desiring wealth above all things.

The photo, unlike the poem is a bit blurry, the poem couldn't be more poignant, suddenly my new favourite Duffy poem. Isolation giving me the chance to pause, reflect on what is meaningful, beautiful and true in life feels like an extended moment of grace. Life.

Caul - Strangely this poem about the birthing membrane really resonates with me. Maybe that's not that strange. I had a friend whose brother was born completely within the membrane, the waters had not broken. Apparently it's an old wives tale that children born this way are always safe near water. He is now a submariner. 😮

I don't know if I like Duffy's poems or not, I think the problem is that there are so very, very many of them. You have to wade through a lot that strike me as narratives or simplistic to get to one that makes you pause.

A cute poem ‘In Mrs Tilscher‘s class”. -
You ran through the gates, impatient to be grown,
as the sky split open into a thunderstorm.
There‘s probably more to this poem but I‘m taking this one at face value.

Favourites today were 'The Virgin punishing the Infant', 'Foreign', 'Telegrams' and 'Lovesick'.

#HeyJune Day 14: Definitely a #FromMeToYou poetry, or should I say Thou, Thee. I devoured Carol Ann Duffy‘s poetry, including tagged book, after hearing her speak at the Singapore Writers Festival a few years back. Found this image being shared on FB by those who follow Chris Riddell, brilliant artist.

I‘ve never been big on poetry but I‘m starting to enjoy freedom of it
