Pickpick

Another supernatural detective, a genre I can't get enough of. (And apparently I'm not alone, given the popularity of modern takes like the TV show SUPERNATURAL.) The lead character's abrupt dismissal of his audience at the end of most stories "using the recognized formula" (what a smug, douchey phrase) really grated on me, but other than that these were pretty terrific.

Pickpick

Turn of the twentieth century tales in the style of Sherlock Holmes with the twist that he is also a exorcist and scientific magic user who is called in to solve hauntings. So why the bail? Because they all are so very similar- a haunted house, innocents in distress, Carnacki saves the day using a combination of deduction, scientific method and esoteric arts. Three in this same pattern were enough. May finish the others one day.

On my left the end wall had bellied-in towards me in a pair of gargantuan lips, black and utterly monstrous, to within a yard of my face. I fumbled for a mad instant at my revolver; not for it, but for myself, for the danger was a thousand times worse than death.

If in sleep or in ye hour of danger ye hear the voice of ye Hogge, cease ye to meddle. For ye Hogge doth be of the outer Monstrous Ones, nor shall any human come nigh him nor continue meddling when ye hear his voice, for in ye earlier life upon the world did the Hogge have power, and shall again in ye end. And in that ye Hogge had once a power upon ye earth, so doth he crave sore to come again.
