CARMILLA (Gothic Classic)
CARMILLA (Gothic Classic): Featuring First Female Vampire - Mysterious and Compelling Tale that Influenced Bram Stokers Dracula | Joseph Sheridan Le Fanu
3 posts | 4 read | 2 to read
This carefully crafted ebook: CARMILLA (Gothic Classic) is formatted for your eReader with a functional and detailed table of contents. Carmilla is narrated by a young woman preyed upon by a female vampire named Carmilla, later revealed to be Mircalla, Countess Karnstein (Carmilla is an anagram of Mircalla). Le Fanu presents the story as part of the casebook of Dr. Hesselius, whose departures from medical orthodoxy rank him as the first occult doctor in literature. The story is often anthologized and has been adapted many times in film and other media. It is a one of the earliest works of vampire fiction, predating Bram Stoker's Dracula (1897) by 26 years. Joseph Thomas Sheridan Le Fanu (1814-1873) was an Irish writer of Gothic tales and mystery novels. He was a leading ghost-story writer of the nineteenth century and was central to the development of the genre in the Victorian era. M. R. James described Le Fanu as "absolutely in the first rank as a writer of ghost stories".

the narration was good but this didnt strike as anything spectacular for the genre. it seemed similar to other vampire stories.

Pickpick

Had a lot of fun listening to this audiobook narrated by Megan Follows. She did a great job with the suspenseful parts and I found I didn‘t want to listen to it right before bed.

Carmilla was on NPRs list of scariest books, and I picked it up on a sale from audible. It was very short, under three hours and this particular version was a dramatization. It‘s a vampire story centered around a young woman who escaped the clutches of the titular vampiress. For it‘s time it was probably ground breaking but felt like old hat.
