I promise I am not gong to quote this whole book today. 😂 But I had to share the bookish one. 📚❤️

Commuovere (Italian) - to be moved in a heartwarming way, usually relating to a story that moved you to tears.

Fits perfectly with my ? toast breakfast this morning!

Karisa Oh! I love that little book so much. Illustrations are so perfectly chosen and the words are just delicious! 12m
4thhouseontheleft @Karisa It is a lovely little book. I‘ve dipped into it a few times over the years, but never read it cover to cover. 9m

Mixing the seasons this morning!

Picking off some low-hanging fruit for #NFNov, and this book has been on my shelf for years! Found it in the basement level of The Strand a few years ago.

Plus, my attention is shot this week, so I need short books with lots of illustrations. 😂

I‘ve read quite a few books over the years on the Rwandan genocide. The subtitle - especially the last 3 words - really says a lot about this one. It is “A story of war and what comes after”. And this memoir, unlike many others I have read, really highlights the “After”. The hidden scars of war, the healing that takes years, decades, a lifetime.

Litsy hive mind!!

Last year I found this Reading Log template, and LOVE it! All the tabs were already created with awesome formulas that show me how diverse I am reading, what genres I read the most, etc etc.

I thought I found it on Book Riot, but can't find it anymore, and I am trying to see if the same person made a 2020 one. Anyone recognize where this spreadsheet came from?

BarbaraBB I recognize it, I downloaded it too. Someone shared a link here. But I don‘t remember who either 🤷🏻‍♀️ 2d
4thhouseontheleft @BarbaraBB I should have kept a blank copy to use in future years. But I didn't. I may have to make a copy of my 2019 one and then clear out all of this year's stats, but I'm lazy, and I'd rather not. 😆 2d
Captivatedbybooks Can you email me the link & ill make a blank one lol i want to use this 2d
See All 20 Comments
Marina_h I'm pretty sure it was on Book Riot, but it's not there anymore. I looked for it a month ago or so put I can only find the 2014 version 😟 2d
wanderinglynn That looks like an awesome tracker! 2d
Marina_h I have a blank copy. Does the link work? 2d
4thhouseontheleft @Marina_h That worked, thank you so much! I made a copy. Now all I have to do is add in my Popsugar RC tracking sheet and I'm good to go! (edited) 2d
Marina_h @4thhouseontheleft happy to help 😊 I'm glad I found it myself so I don't have to make a whole new one. 2d
4thhouseontheleft @wanderinglynn It is! I love the pie charts tab, it is visually appealing and I learned about my personal reading trends using it this year. 2d
4thhouseontheleft @Captivatedbybooks @Marina_h just posted a copy of it in her comment! 2d
LMJenkins Just copied as well - thanks, all! 2d
BookwormM I may have to use this next year my problem will be remembering to fill it in 2d
Jerdencon Thanks @Marina_h I copied it too! Now to remember to use it! Lol 2d
emtobiasz I‘ve been using this spreadsheet too and love it! I added a bunch of extra fields to personalize it to my own challenges and reading concerns. I like that the tabs let me ignore the challenges if I‘m letting them guide/guilt my reading too heavily. 2d
TheSpineView Cool spreadsheet bit! I have not seen a 2020 version of it that a recall. If I do, I'll let you know.😊 2d
DGRachel I use this, too! I had hoped she‘d update it for 2020, because I‘m lazy and don‘t want to have to fix the formulas myself. 😭😭 I love this spreadsheet so much, I did one a year for every year I had Goodreads data, then did one that combined all the years before I joined Litsy, one for all the years since I‘ve been on Litsy, and then one that combined all the years. (edited) 2d
Captivatedbybooks @Marina_h THANK YOU!!!! 2d
mariaku21 I use that one too - I did find it on book riot. Maybe the author that writes about the Read Harder challenge will post a link to the revised edition when she writes about the next one? 1d

👆👆👆 THIS.

Charitable giving often operates under the guise that those being helped are unable to help themselves.
Many efforts of giving actually destabilize local economies. The initial TOMS model is a great example.

People living in oppressive situations want and need more than being patronized with small tokens of charity. They need more than being someone‘s “feel good moment” during the holidays.

Tamra Truth 2d
Scochrane26 My church & I started giving to Kiva about 6 years ago. It‘s a great way to donate & help the local economy. It‘s not affiliated w/ churches. You give an initial amount & pick who you want to contribute to. Micro-loans, so you get the initial amount back & can loan again. We have my youth group distribute the $ now when we get re-paid. They enjoy it. 2d
MayJasper What is a TOMS model? Very interesting subject, wanting to help but not knowing how or assuming you know what's best for other people. 2d

4thhouseontheleft @Scochrane26 Kiva is fantastic! I have been giving to Kiva for years too. One of the fellow alumni on my study abroad program is actually one of the founders. 😊 2d
4thhouseontheleft @MayJasper TOMS is a brand of shoes that popularized the buy one, give one model. For every pair of shoes purchased, they give a pair to a family in need. They have since made some changes to their approach, including setting up a shoe-manufacturing factory in Haiti, staffed by local employees. 2d
Scochrane26 @4thhouseontheleft That‘s really cool that you know a founder. I thought you prob knew about kiva but explained more in case anyone else wants to know. 2d
TrishB Yep. 2d
4thhouseontheleft @Scochrane26 Yes, thank you! I thought about mentioning Kiva, but ran out of space. 😁 2d
MayJasper Thank you 👍😊 @4thhouseontheleft 2d

I‘ve read about 30 pages in 3 days, I guess I‘m officially in a bit of a reading slump.

I blame Disney+. 🤷🏻‍♀️ While I don‘t celebrate the religious aspects of 🎄, I still like the 🎥 and festivities in *moderation*, and Maya and I had a blast watching this silly, light-hearted 🎅 flick.

It made me want to give Anna Kendrick‘s memoir another go. I put it down a few months ago because I didn‘t feel in the right mood. I am now!

DGRachel I blame you for the sobbing I did at the end of this film! I saw your post and had to go watch it and was a blubbering holiday feels mess. 😭🤣🤣 I hope you‘re feeling better! 2d

The Nickel Boys: A Novel | Colson Whitehead
post image

Another #bookhaul from the library! Nickel Boys will probably go back unread, since it is at the top of my book wishlist that I gave to hubby for Chanukah.

This week will be filled with birthday and 🕎 shopping (I knock them both out at the same time for Maya), and Thanksgiving planning, so we‘ll see how much time I have for reading.

Off to B&N soon to pick up a few signed editions as gifts (and The Water Dancer for me! 🥳)

MidnightBookGirl Loved With the Fire on High! We read it for our YA book club for adults.
ChaoticMissAdventures Nickel Boys is fantastic. It is sad that it is based in a true story and true place that I had never heard of. Gave me a lot to research. 3d

The cold I have had since Friday has been giving me pounding headaches, so I haven‘t been reading much this weekend. Hopefully this coming week will be more productive! Definitely enjoying Disney+ in my downtime though! Especially the Mandalorian.

My #currentread and Otherworld are for the two prompts I have left for #pop19, 🤞 I finish that challenge this week!

#TIL This quote reminds me so much of a song by one of my refugee clients. The refugee help centre I worked at in Brisbane had a musical group known as the Scattered People Choir, composed of refugees, asylum seekers and friends. One of our songs was called My Hometown, and evokes the love and longing so many refugees have for their home.

Trying out a new approach for reading challenges in 2020. I made a list of the top books I wish I had gotten around to reading this year, and I'll be referring to this list first while picking books for RC prompts. Let's see how long this lasts... 😉

jb72 Great idea! I‘m making a list of those books I‘ve been meaning to read for a long time. 6d
wanderinglynn Great idea! 👍🏻 6d
4thhouseontheleft @jb72 That was the original idea for this list, but I noticed that most of the books that I have owned for a while aren't on here. OOPS! 😂 I think I need a 4th column for books I have owned the longest. Yep...doing that now! 6d

1. Thanksgiving is definitely November-ish.😃
2. Turned in an application for one of my Town's Advisory Boards. Considering my utter lack of motivation this week & the fact it isn't due until mid-December, I consider that a huge success!
3. Family movie night - probably Manchurian on Disney+ and then maybe Doctor Strange.
4. Only one, he passed away after a kidney transplant when I was...holy sh*t, Maya's age. My dad's twin.
5. 👍

Normal People | Sally Rooney
post image

This was a beautiful character study, I can see why Sally Rooney is getting a lot of attention right now. Although it took me a few chapters to become engaged with the story (it was a rough transition from Ocean Vuong‘s book!), before i knew it, Connell and Marianne had found there way into my heart and mind. It is an understated but brilliant take on young adulthood. It also reminded me very much of my university days!

This was a lyrical, beautiful story that read like a memoir. It packs an emotional punch, yet also contains themes of hope and resilience. Reading this, I was reminded of the life story of one of my former refugee clients, especially in regards to how war, violence and PTSD can impact a family long after they are resettled in a new country.

Definitely a top read of 2019!

My stack of 2019 #Goodreads Award nominees that I plan on dispersing between my NF reads this month! Still hoping that my Water Dancer hold request comes in soon, too.

And I stopped at Starbucks while I was out and got a peppermint mocha and reusable mug! Not very impressed with this year‘s design. Oddly, I have an easier time reading it when looking at a photo of the cup vs seeing it in person. 🤷🏻‍♀️

I‘m hoping to fly through the rest of my Percy Jackson book this afternoon so I can dive into all the GR Award nominees I currently have on the holds shelf at the library!

Anyone else “cramming” in a few reads before the first round of voting closes? 😁

Sharpeipup 🙋🏼‍♀️ 2w
4thhouseontheleft @Sharpeipup 🙌🏽🙌🏽 What‘s on your list? (edited) 2w
Sharpeipup Pretty much every non fiction nominee... 2w
4thhouseontheleft @Sharpeipup There are some really good ones in the NF category! I requested a few from the library, but they haven‘t come in yet. 2w
Bookzombie The GR Awards always make me realize that I don‘t read a lot of recently released books. I think I counted 5 out of all the categories that I have read. 🙂 2w

#GuessWhat can you name this #iconic book from the cover design???? I‘ll hide the answer behind a spoiler tag in the comments.

Do you have a book cover you want to share?!?

Post using the hashtag #GuessWhat and tag @BarbaraBB

Thanks for the tag @Cinfhen 🎉 I‘ll tag @wanderinglynn and @RachelO

Cinfhen Oh!!! Totally missed that. I have a different cover that I associate with that book. Thanks for playing 💙 2w

1. The community and people
2. I scroll past if it‘s not for me. I am seeing a lot of talk about #screamathon today. I have no issue with people unfollowing or muting if that doesn‘t interest you! I had no control over a similar hashtag created by someone else this year. Halloween is my jam, but I hold my breath through all the Christmas stuff. 🤷🏻‍♀️
3. Litsy swag
4. Daily
5. A mix of things
6. 🛑 the trending # feature

sprainedbrain #screamathon is my favorite time of the year! 2w
Texreader Litsy swag! Agreed! 2w
Kimberlone Hopefully more people are aware of the hashtag muting feature now and will be able to filter out the posts they don‘t want to see. I just tend to scroll past stuff that doesn‘t interest me rather than be bothered by it 2w
See All 24 Comments
4thhouseontheleft @Kimberlone It would help if we could do it from the app. I know all the swap and challenges take a lot of work to organize and run, and major props to the people that do a bunch of them. Between #screamathon and #booked2020 that‘s basically my limit as far as hosting goes. 😂 2w
StillLookingForCarmenSanDiego I really don't like how this line of questioning had created a kind of Litsy shaming in how people choose to post. There is no wrong was to use Litsy. People are concerned that there is less activity, but then making the people who do post feel bad. 2w
4thhouseontheleft @StillLookingForCarmenSanDiego I wasn‘t going to post this at all, until I saw a lot of comments about screamathon and wanted to address it. I truly don‘t mind people unfollowing me if our interests don‘t match up. I‘m not here for likes or litfluence. 😃 But yeah, my philosophy is you do you, and I‘ll do me. 😄 2w
Kimberlone @4thhouseontheleft agreed. The functions should be same whether website or app based. 2w
Addison_Reads @4thhouseontheleft I personally love #screamathon. It's the first activity I ever participated in on Litsy. Everyone has their own tastes, but we're all adults, if you don't want to see something, scroll past or unfollow, seems simple enough. Part of what makes Litsy great is we're all different. 😁 2w
LibrarianRyan @StillLookingForCarmenSanDiego I hope people don‘t feel bad. That‘s never my intention and I‘m sure it‘s not others. Sometimes I think it‘s nice to know pet peeves. Don‘t you want to know them in any relationship. It allows us to talk things out instead of exploding and having the call out culture you see on other platforms. It seems more rational give and take for most people instead of arguing and craziness. (edited) 2w
LibrarianRyan @4thhouseontheleft I loved screamathon and you did a n awesome job. Your right, you had no control of the similar tags and they were so close. And you had yours first. I won‘t lie, I got them mixed up and I only participated in one. Don‘t let it bother you. You did great and we‘re an excellent host! 2w
4thhouseontheleft @LibrarianRyan 💚💙💜 And I am having a blast with #BBRC. My favorite challenge this year! (But shhh...don‘t tell my #booked2019 co-hosts). 🤣🤣 2w
CarolynM A big yes to Litsy swag🙂 2w
StillLookingForCarmenSanDiego @LibrarianRyan I don't think anyone is purposely making anyone feel bad, it's just an unintended result that I don't care for. And all the concerns that people have have already been discussed and argued about at length on the OnwardLitsy FB group. I just don't like negativity spilling over into Listy. But the muting function is becoming known about, so heop 2w
StillLookingForCarmenSanDiego @LibrarianRyan *So hopefully that helps people enjoy the app better! 2w
LibrarianRyan @4thhouseontheleft thanks. I‘m trying at #booked but it‘s pushed me. Which is a good thing. read header doesn‘t push me, but I know the people hosting book. Have to earn my A. It‘s weird but it‘s how my mind works. 😃 2w
LibrarianRyan @StillLookingForCarmenSanDiego very true. I “left” Fb almost two years ago and don‘t regret it. Technically I still have an account for work purposes, but I‘m only one like 2 times a year, do my conference posts and that‘s it. It‘s just so toxic. 🤢🤮. I didn‘t realize the onward group had grown toxic as well. That‘s a bummer. Here hoping it stays away from my sanctuary. 2w
LibrarianRyan @marleed 😁❤️👍🏻 2w
Sace Personally I love the Halloween alongs, but I did a lot of unfollowing and hashtag muting this year. I know you have no control on similar hashtags but my perception is that the similar names/events happen frequently and usually by the same members and being the cynical a-hole that I am it just annoys me so I start unfollowing a ton of people when those copycat hashtags pop up. 2w
ljuliel Regarding the Halloween posts ? I didn‘t really follow along with any of it, so no idea what that‘s about . My questions were not intended to cause problems, only to try to see why it‘s gotten so quiet in here and so many have left. I think everyone that responded was very polite and civil. It sometimes does some good to allow folks to offer their opinions in a civil manner. @LibrarianRyan summed it up well. 2w
4thhouseontheleft @ljuliel I didn‘t know you were the creator! I wasn‘t sure it came from lol. I think it has sparked some interesting discussions. 2w
ljuliel Yea, I certainly didn‘t intend for it to offend anyone. I just think everyone gave their own opinions . Some I might agree with, others I don‘t, but I‘m glad everyone felt comfortable enough to talk. I‘m sorry if it caused problems with anyone. 2w
ljuliel @StillLookingForCarmenSanDiego I didn‘t see any Litsy shaming. I saw people giving their opinions in a civil manner. 2w

This was an incredibly honest and emotional memoir, definitely the best I‘ve read so far this year. Her writing evokes the raw, guttural emotions that comes from a shocking DNA discovery. She describes the pain, trauma and processing of all the conflicting feelings perfectly; I felt much the same way on my personal journey discovering biological family. Thought-provoking and a must read!

#bookandlunch 🥪 🥑 📖

Hoping to finish this one today.

ImperfectCJ Beautiful photo! Is that GF bread? 2w
4thhouseontheleft @ImperfectCJ It is! Udi‘s. Not my first choice for GF bread, but I always keep a bit on hand in the freezer. 2w
ImperfectCJ @4thhouseontheleft Thought it looked familiar! Trader Joe's Multigrain GF is my not-favorite-but-on-hand. My favorite store-bought is from a local bakery that supplies the Whole Foods in Asheville, NC (or at least it did in 2014). Insight Meditation Center in Barre, MA, also has spectacular GF bread. I got the recipe, but it's for large batches and doesn't scale down well. And so ends my “GF breads of the US“ tour. 🙄 2w
See All 10 Comments
Sharpeipup Udi‘s is not my favorite either but they‘ve improved the recipe in recent years. 2w
Sharpeipup @ImperfectCJ add sift gluten free to your GF bread map...it‘s a small batch bakery in Minneapolis 2w
ImperfectCJ @Sharpeipup Time for a visit to Minnesota! (City Cakes in Salt Lake City is excellent, too. Vegan as well as GF.) 2w
4thhouseontheleft @ImperfectCJ Which bakery? We‘ve bought delicious GF bread from an Asheville bakery before, Rhu! It‘s available in the grocery delivery coop we belong to, most of the products are from Western NC. (edited) 2w
ImperfectCJ @4thhouseontheleft I actually don't know the name of the bakery. I just remember that I got it at Whole Foods and it was from NC. There used to be a dedicated GF bakery (in Mooresville, maybe?) that supplied WF, and I think I assumed it was from that one. But we're headed through Asheville again next summer, and now I know to check out Rhu! 2w
tracey38 That's a pretty fall picture. Your lunch looks yummy. 2w

#NFNov #TIL : I love that Dani Shapiro takes us through the step by step of her discoveries. Kind of morbid, but obituaries are a gold mine for genealogists and adoptees searching for family.

This is the obituary that filled in the missing 🧩 that led me to the cousin that would help me identify my birth father: https://www.heraldmailmedia.com/obituaries/clara-dickson-wagner/article_c919e68b...

GlassAsDiamonds Wow! That‘s quite amazing! 😊😊😊 (and that‘s one hell of an obituary too!) 2w

I have a new strategy this year! I have a bunch of nominee books checked out from the library, I am trying to read during the voting period, before casting a vote.

Next up is the tagged book, which also counts for #NFNov and #nonfiction2019 #history.

It‘s a topic close to home, since I found my birth family with DNA testing, including. birth father who had no clue I existed, so I was dragging my feet on reading it. Now is the time! #Goodreads

Amiable This is a great book. I also saw the author talk about her experience at a bookstore in Connecticut when the book first came out. She has a fabulously soothing voice —she hosts a podcast called “Family Secrets,” if you haven‘t already discovered it! 2w
Bookwormjillk Oh, I love the Goodreads awards! I‘ll have to go check out the list. 2w
Chrissyreadit Wow! It sounds like DNA testing made a huge difference! All it did for me was confirm I‘m related to my brother- and I wish we were not. 2w
See All 15 Comments
4thhouseontheleft @Amiable I haven't, thanks!! I'll check out the podcast. 2w
4thhouseontheleft @Chrissyreadit It did. My search for my birth family turned up nothing until DNA testing went mainstream. I had the first name of my birth mother (but nothing else), and the father was always listed as Unknown on my adoption paperwork. I would have never found him without DNA, and we now have a close relationship! He last saw my birth mother when she would have been 3 months pregnant, and had no clue about the pregnancy. 😊 2w
4thhouseontheleft @Bookwormjillk I see a lot of nominations that are popular on Litsy! 2w
Amiable @Chrissyreadit Ha! I said the same thing —I took the Ancestry DNA test sort of hoping to find a different family. But I‘m definitely related to my sister and my mother —and I wish we were not as well. 2w
Amiable @4thhouseontheleft I love hearing these types of stories! The husband of a friend of mine discovered a first cousin he‘d never known—turns out his uncle had left Vietnam after serving in the war and didn‘t know he‘d gotten a woman pregnant. That baby — a daughter —is now living in London, and she flew to the US last summer to meet her father. 2w
4thhouseontheleft @Amiable @chrissyreadit 😂 😂 Family is such an interesting thing, isn't it? I don't have the best relationship with my parents, and my mom never wanted me to search for my birth family, so we still have a strained relationship over it. Although they have bonded with my two younger half-sisters, and just met one recently. None of us were raised with our bmom, she chose an adoption plan for all 3 of us. 2w
4thhouseontheleft @Amiable That is really neat! These stories, as well as NPE's (non paternal events) like the author's story, are incredibly common. DNA testing is truly changing the way we view family history and identity, and definitely shaking some skeletons in the closet. I personally think it is a good thing if handled delicately and gently, and may help to break some of the old taboos that still linger. 2w
Chrissyreadit @Amiable oddly I‘ve always wondered if a half sibling would show up from Vietnam Nam because I know my father had a girl friend there. But he did not know of one when he was alive. 2w
Chrissyreadit @4thhouseontheleft I agree about family needing to be redefined. Sometimes family works- sometimes it doesn‘t. My niece moved in with us and has so much pain as a result of her parents. It would have been better and easier if they had let us adopt her than keeping an unwanted/unvalued child. Meantime I‘m going to go ahead and redraw my family tree to one I prefer...😎 (edited) 2w
Amiable @4thhouseontheleft During the author presentation there was a very interesting discussion about whose rights should prevail -- the adopted person looking for information (medical and otherwise) about their roots, or the biological parent who gave up the child with an expectation of privacy. Nobody could have predicted 60 years ago that DNA would enable us to track down our biological families- - whether or not those families wanted to be found. 2w
4thhouseontheleft @Amiable That is a common debate. The other side of that argument is that adoptees don‘t have the same legal and social rights as non-adopted in regards to access to original birth certificate and identity. I‘m obviously biased, but the laws prevented my birth mother and I from reuniting and meeting each other before she passed away in 2009 (we were both searching for each other in the 2000‘s), a situation I will forever wish was different. 2w
