Finished the Binti trilogy tonight! This series definitely did not go in the direction I expected, but I enjoyed the journey. The third book was my favorite.

This book is SO good so far! I was surprised to see a romance novel on the NYT 💯 notable books list, but I think I am starting to see why it earned a spot!

Addison_Reads I was surprised to see it there too. I never read romance, but I'm going to try this one soon. Glad you're enjoying it. 5d

I‘m a bigger fan of the Akata Witch series, probably because I prefer fantasy over science fiction. However, I do love the characters and world building in this series, and the storyline definitely took a turn I was not expecting.

I made it pretty obvious to my family that I wanted this book for Chanukah. 😂 🕎

Now that I have the book in hand, I‘ll be posting the schedule for the #1619GroupRead soon!

Aims42 My dad was so excited to get a copy this weekend! He says he‘s going to have my mom wrap it up for a Christmas gift, but I‘m thinking he‘s going to want to read it before then 😆👍🏻It sounds like a very interesting read!! 5d
Kenyazero Happy Hanukkah! And have fun reading! 5d

We received some heartbreaking news on the 1st night of Hanukkah. At the end of last year, Maya‘s homeroom/science teacher was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer.

He passed away this weekend. Mr. Anderson continued teaching up until the very end. He was an incredible teacher who made the last school year easier and fun for his students. I often “sat in” on his Zoom classes during remote learning because he was so engaging and full of life. ⬇️

4thhouseontheleft He was loved by all, and today is going to be a very difficult day for our school community. Please keep teachers, staff and students in your thoughts. We all had thought his chemo treatment and surgery over the summer had gone well, and he was still teaching up until 2 weeks ago, so his sudden passing has come as a shock to all. (edited) 6d

Book 1.5 of the Binti series, this short story delved into Binti‘s PTSD following the massacre in the ship that carried her to Oomza Uni. It helped flesh out Okwu‘s character, and introduced some new friends that I really like!

There is so much depth and nuance to this novella! I love the world building. Sentient jellyfish-like aliens, an elite university attended by beings from all over the galaxy, and so much more that I hope to learn more about in the rest of the series.

This was supposed to be my pick for #booked2021 #bakedgoodsoncover but I will have to find another one.

When I found myself bored 10 chapters in, I decided to bail. I wS already annoyed by the use of the R word for a person with an intellectual disability.

Good thing I have a back up book for the baked goods prompt!

Scochrane26 The “r” word may bother us now, but the DSM still classified intellectual disability as mental retardation until around 2012-13. The agency I worked for at the time had to change their name because it was part of the title. 1w
Cinfhen I bailed on this one very early on!!! Wise move 1w
Prairiegirl_reading Ugh!! I‘ve had this on my shelf for years, I might as well give it away now. I can‘t stand that!!! 😡 1w
Ruthiella I also didn‘t find this book scintillating. I don‘t think Bender‘s flat style combined with the fantastical is for me. 1w

I‘ve picked 4 books off of @mklong ‘s fantastic #newyearwhodis list! So many interesting books to choose from!

I doubt I‘ll be able to read all of these in January, but if I read 2 on audio, I may be able to do it!

monalyisha @4thhouseontheleft That‘s how I‘m feeling with my list, too! There are so many good choices. But I‘m not an overly speedy reader. Unless it‘s a romance…they‘ve got their own set of rules. 😏 2w

When I announced my group read for The 1619 Project this morning, I did not think that the Rittenhouse verdict would so closely follow. Not guilty, of course. 😡 None of us should be surprised. This is what our current justice system, entrenched in systemic racism, was designed to do.

If you missed my earlier #groupread announcement, it's the post right before this one. We'll start the #1619GroupRead in January.

Stay angry, fight on.

I'm excited to announce that I will be hosting a #GroupRead of The 1619 Project in 2021!

We will start sometime in January (exact date TBD) and run through May, and will read and discuss one essay each week. I have set up a Google form with all the information, which you can read and sign up here: https://forms.gle/kZVEfqQDprxYEkcPA

If you plan on participating, please comment below if you prefer starting on Jan 1 or Jan 8. #1619GroupRead

4thhouseontheleft Due to the nature of the topic, I have set up a few guidelines below to ensure that our group read is a safe space for everyone, especially BIPOC Littens. The number of times Matthew runs his hands through his hair in this book is becoming increasingly annoying.

ravenlee When I read Cinder I was distracted by Kai constantly flipping his bangs. Why do authors fixate on something like this? 3w
megnews @ravenlee and why doesn‘t a good editor notice? 3w
BarbaraJean Ugh, these kinds of things are such a pet peeve. @ravenlee @megnews My questions exactly!! When I read the Wheel of Time series, I was so annoyed at one character repeatedly tugging her braid. And don‘t get me started on the number of times a female character was described as crossing her arms “underneath her breasts.” 🙄 3w
See All 10 Comments
BarbaraBB You made me laugh out loud in a situation where I wasn‘t really allowed to at work 🤪 3w
4thhouseontheleft @ravenlee @megnews @BarbaraJean Glad I‘m not the only one bothered by things like this! I also wonder how editors don‘t pick up on this. Although this whole book needs major editing. 185 pages in and NOTHING is happening. And character development has been missing too. Only finishing this because it is the last one in the trilogy. 3w
ravenlee I think editors/editorial staff don‘t read books like reader-consumers do, and they don‘t have quite the same experience. Without sitting down and reading a book straight through, maybe these repetitions don‘t stick out so much, especially if the editor has read several versions. I bet that, after all the rewrites, some editors don‘t read the entire finished book again. Hopefully most do, but I‘m skeptical. 3w
julesG @ravenlee I agree. I often think the editor read and worked on the first two chapters, two chapters in the middle and, sometimes, two at the end. 3w
julesG Book 3 is awful. So many things do not happen. It was disappointing. A friend, who read the German translation, asked me whether I could give her a recap of book 3,so she could splurge on a different book. 😈 3w
BethM If you‘re not enjoying this one definitely skip Time‘s Convert. 3w
The_Penniless_Author @BarbaraJean Was wondering if someone would bring up Wheel of Time. The braid tugging is definitely my biggest pet peeve, although "skirt smoothing" isn't far behind ? 3w

I remember when LuLaRoe was HUGE amongst moms where I live. I always thought the leggings were ugggly, and I abhor MLMs. But I couldn‘t resist watching this documentary this week.

#TIL the company pressured some of their top sellers to fly to Tijuana for weight loss surgery, and convinced families to go all in, leaving stable day jobs so they became fully reliant on LuLaRoe income. This #BossBabe company was TOXIC. #NFN21

rsteve388 Holy shit that's wild... I knew friends who did LuLuRoe had. I idea of that history. 3w

Kayla.Adriena Omg! Monat my fricken stepmonster is into that! And a lot of girls I went to HS with call themselves boss babes 😝. I can't think of the one company, it's some pink drink powder stuff. I definitely need to watch this 3w
lele1432 I‘m in some anti-MLM groups and this was all the talk for weeks! I need to watch it. 3w
4thhouseontheleft @lele1432 Yes! I‘m in a few mom groups on FB, and most of them don‘t allow people to promote their MLM business. That‘s where I first heard about this documentary! 3w
4thhouseontheleft @rsteve388 same! @Skyrimir that sounds like an interesting podcast! @Victoriahoperose those conventions they had looked so cultish! 3w
4thhouseontheleft @EvieBee @kayla.Adriena I‘ve actually had to distance myself from a few “friends” over the years who would contact me incessantly about their MLM. Rodan & Fields, Shaklee, and some of the nail ones are popular where I live. I don‘t know anyone selling Monat, but my mom gets bombarded by the Norwex sellers. (edited) 3w
5feet.of.fury It‘s so wild. I have a friend who got in on the early side of LULA and made a good amount of money for a while, but I know plenty of people who didn‘t.. and I remember the stinky legging debacle. 3w

🍁 Went on a hike with a friend yesterday to enjoy the last of the fall foliage. We had such a great time together!

📚 When I‘m at a really exciting part, or close to the end of a book, and my reading time gets interrupted.

Amiable Isn‘t this book amazing? So well written. 3w
4thhouseontheleft @Amiable it is very good, and so well researched. And he quotes another book I like on the subject 3w
Amiable @4thhouseontheleft Agreed -- “Dreamland“ was excellent as well.
MoonWitch94 I love looking at the fall colors 🍁 Thanks for playing 🍂📖✨ 3w

I‘ve spent the past few weeks with this book, reading and digesting one chapter at a time with Maya. We both learned a lot, and had some great discussions together. It‘s filled with important historical information that gives a fuller, more accurate picture than what is taught in most K-12 history curriculums.

#pop21 #socialjustice

ravenlee What age would you say this is appropriate for? I‘d like to work it into my homeschool curriculum but don‘t know when. 4w
4thhouseontheleft @ravenlee I would say middle school or higher. Maya did skim a few of the sections that were heavy on dates, wars, battles, etc. If I was going to add it into a curriculum, The chapters can be stand alone, and go chronologically through time. So, for ex if you are doing a Civil War unit, you could include the chapter that covers this time period. I‘ll be pulling it out frequently to reread alongside her history units at school! 4w
4thhouseontheleft @ravenlee there is also a fantastic list at the end of middle grade/YA books written by Indigenous authors! 4w

ravenlee Oh, that sounds perfect! Thank you so much. Our history curriculum is a four-year cycle, and kiddo is in fourth grade now so next year we start with ancient history again. That should give me plenty of time to read through it on my own and do the planning by the time we get back to US history. 4w
Singout Good for you! I found the detail and length too much when I use audiobooks, but it‘s definitely a seminal work. I just finished “Unsettling Canada,” which might have some parallels. 4w
ncsufoxes I read about this book a few weeks ago & made a mental note about it. I will definitely have to put it on my list now 4w
coffees Ohhh I've seen a couple of these for young readers adaptations! 4w

My tentative plan for #Booked2022 #Winter! Tagged another book in consideration for the Set in China prompt.

1. The Witches: Salem, 1692: maybe a stretch, but it does involve a close look at Puritanism.
2. 🎧 📖
3. I have 3 on my TBR for this prompt, also tagged book and a Lisa See novel 🎧 📖
4. Maybe I will finally read this trilogy!
5. From Nigerian publishing house Farafina
6. 🎧 📖

If you want to #buddyread any of these let me know!

Cinfhen I‘m planning on reading BlueBird, Bluebird too! I‘d be up for a #buddyread 🤓 4w
Cinfhen And I totally think The Witches works for #Religion 💯 4w
Cinfhen Siege & Storm would also work for #AdaptedForSmallScreen #SharingIdeas 4w

TrishB My daughter loved the tagged one! 4w
4thhouseontheleft @Cinfhen I‘m using the first book in the trilogy for the small screen prompt! Still trying to find a spot for the last book. (edited) 4w
4thhouseontheleft @Cinfhen do you think you will read it in January? That will probably be one of the first audiobooks I listen to in the new year. 4w
Kangaj1 Thanks for the Freshwater rec 4w
4thhouseontheleft @Kangaj1 the original publisher is the one above. but the US edition I think is under a different publisher. Not sure how strict you are with choosing books for your prompts. 😃 (edited) 4w
4thhouseontheleft @TrishB Goos to know! 4w
BarbaraTheBibliophage I‘m intending to read Prodigal Summer for #eco-feminist prompt. Definitely up for a buddy read. 4w
sebrittainclark I really liked Freshwater. Super interesting read. 4w
sprainedbrain Gosh I love Prodigal Summer. 💚 4w

I didn‘t even make it past the dedication, “and for all those who have lost someone to the crisis” without 😢😢.

I‘ve been really wanting to read this. Anyone read it who has lost a friend or family member to the opiate epidemic? How hard of a read was it for you? Can‘t help but think of my birth mother, and my sister‘s significant other every time I try to approach this book.

I read this book solely to fulfill the #pop21 “book everyone seems to have read but you” prompt.

The narration was great in the 🎧 📖, which is what made this tolerable. There‘s a reason why I didn‘t read this when everyone else was, I knew it was not for me. And I was right! It wasn‘t terrible, but there are so many better psychological thrillers out there.

Megabooks Very much agree with your review! 1mo
Susanita Not everyone. I bailed after one chapter! 1mo
SayersLover I‘ll admit I couldn‘t make it past the first 2 pages. I never did understand what all the hype was about. @4thhouseontheleft 1mo

Shadow of Night: A Novel | Deborah Harkness

The history and time spent in Elizabethan England was quite fun. But Diana and Matthew seem to have lost ALL sense of urgency when they time walked to the past! I loved when a very unexpected character appeared and basically asked WTH they were doing dallying around so long 🤣. Although I have some books lined up for #NFNovembwr, I will be picking up The Book of Life next so I can finish the trilogy.

#pop21 #longestbookonTBR

LazyLibrary This is next for me! I am re-reading Discovery bc I read it years ago but didn‘t go right to the second book! Huge mistake. So it‘s a pretty hefty read for a refresher! 1mo
4thhouseontheleft @LazyLibrary that‘s what I did too, read the first one maybe in 2012, but never finished the series. 1mo

I forgot to post my review when I finished this!

I first read ADOW not long after it was first published, and I hated it. At the time, I think it came on the heels of Twilight and way too much vampire-centric fiction. This time around, I enjoyed it much more, and am already almost finished with the second book.

This is why I rarely give 👎 reviews. My reaction to a book is sometimes more about my mood than the book itself.

#pop21 #dowrtr

JamieArc I have the same thoughts about panning books. My reviews are so subjective to my mood at the time that it‘s best to take them with a grain of salt, whether they are not so stellar reviews or over-the-top good reviews 😂 1mo
Lizpixie I was exactly the same with this one too, I bought it when it was released the DNFed it fit over two years before picking it back up. It‘s now one of my favourite magical realism series👍 1mo
MoonWitch94 I‘m so glad you liked it this time! 1mo

We‘re thrilled to be back for our 5th year of the Litsy #BookedReadingChallenge !!!

It‘s still such a joy and pleasure to connect with all of you!!! And we ESPECIALLY love seeing your creativity in choosing book titles!!!

Here are the 24 prompts for #Booked2022 along with the sign up info

As always just have FUN with it - open to all. Join us for the year or just a season—it‘s up to you!

coffees "if you only post on Litsy, we won't count your completed books towards the drawings." Where else do we have to post? Also, why do you need our real names? Sorry, I'd like to participate but I don't like to share my name 1mo
4thhouseontheleft @coffees We no longer track books participants read ourselves, due to the time-consuming nature, and post a Google Form every quarter for participants to report how many prompts they completed that quarter. That's what that sentence is referring to, you don't have to post elsewhere, just fill out the quarterly Google forms if you would like to be entered into the raffle. You don't have to provide your real name if you do not want to. 1mo
4thhouseontheleft @coffees I'm speaking to my co-hosts to see about making that question on the form optional, instead of required. @cinfhen @barbarathebibliophage 1mo

Bookgoil I need to try this next year I completely lost track this year! 1mo
Singout Thank you for your hard work! Looking forward to my third year! Do you want the signup response to say that the draw for the first quarter will be in early October? (edited) 1mo
BarbaraTheBibliophage @coffees Hi - I just changed the form as you suggested. Hope this helps! We‘d love to have you join us! 1mo
BarbaraTheBibliophage @Singout I don‘t want that. But it may take me some time to figure out how to fix it. 🤣 1mo
4thhouseontheleft @Singout Thanks for finding and pointing out that error! @BarbaraTheBibliophage let me know if you need help fixing that. 1mo

Part 1 #basicwitchswap

The books! 😍😍 I am in love with all of them! Looks like we also had a similar idea with Llewllyn‘s yearly books, but chose different ones! I am already planning out a Maia Toll study goal in my head for over the winter! @sprainedbrain

4thhouseontheleft @sprainedbrain I also had a very strong hunch you would buy the Austen tarot deck, which was something I have been ogling for a while! ☺️ thank you thank you! 1mo
sprainedbrain I have that Austen tarot, thanks to @jenniferw88 It‘s gorgeous! ❤️ 1mo
jenniferw88 @sprainedbrain you're welcome! This book was one of the first theory ones I read on the subject - it's really good! 1mo

Whoever thought it was a good idea to host a middle school XC meet on Halloween must be a Scrooge! @sprainedbrain this is as far as I‘ve gotten in opening the beautiful swap package you sent me. It‘s been a mad dash chauffeuring from one activity to another today, it‘s going to be a few hours until I have time to myself to savor and open all the goodies! 😬 Our neighborhood goes all out for Halloween, and we‘re hosting the driveway movie tonight!

sprainedbrain No worries! I‘m waiting to open mine until after trick-or-treating. 🖤 1mo
4thhouseontheleft @sprainedbrain oh goodie! I‘d love to wait until midnight, but no way am I staying awake that late tonight! 😂🎃👻 1mo

I love it!! Although I don‘t know who sent it? I think you forgot to identify yourself! That mug is everything, I am going to use it immediately! Looking forward to the treats, and the books! Ironically, I also sent one of these books to my swap partner! The socks are adorable, I will probably lose them to Maya, she steals from my sock drawer all the time. 😜

Thank you so much! #allhallowsreadswap

bibliobard OMG I did the audio of Heart Shaped Box — it was good! 1mo
FantasyChick Love that mug! 1mo
