The Ghost | Mark Conte

A decaying body of an eight-year-old girl is found near a sand dune on the Navarre-Pensacola Beach road. The law enforcement officers soon discover she was actually the second victim and the terror begins in Northwest Florida as children are being kidnapped and killed almost as soon as the bodies of the previous victims are being taken away. The killer does not leave fingerprints, or shoe prints, or bits of fabric. Although every precaution is taken by parents and school officials, the killings continue. There is fear in the streets, in the schools, in the playgrounds and in every home. The Sheriff departments of four counties, the FDLE and the FBI seem powerless to stop it. As the killings continue, the detectives begin calling him The Ghost because of the lack of evidence they could use to identify him. Jodie Murphy, an FBI agent on her first street case is sent to the scene of the murder, an eight-year-old girl's rotting body among the sand dunes of the beach highway with it"s face torn off her skull and the terrible things the killer has done to the little body. The men are throwing up all over the sand dunes. The Santa Rosa County sheriff is stunned. These things do not happen in his county. Navarre is a beautiful beach town on the Gulf of Mexico where there the water is a beautiful blue/green and the beaches are so safe, you can drop your kids at the wooden bridges to the waters and leave them in the hands of the Santa Rosa County lifeguards, the most trusted lifeguards in Florida. Retired Philadelphia detective, Joe Carlucci, who wrote the book on catching serial killers and was the partner of Murphy's father on the Homicide squad in Philadelphia, is brought into the case by agent Murphy. Together they try to hunt down the killer, although he seems to always be one step ahead of the Sheriff's department. The Florida Department of Law Enforcement, the Florida State Police and the FBI. The families of each victim are devastated. The father of the first victim, James Bennett, buys a gun and drives past all the schools and playgrounds hoping to save other children from this monster. The Florida governor has a conference with all law enforcement officials, including the FBI. The governor is told there may be more than one killer. At that point an aide comes in the conference room and tells the governor that two more children's bodies have been discovered. The Governor calls out the National Guard and puts a curfew on Northwest Florida, setting up an immediate response team with the Guard in the hope of catching the killer or killers and saving the lives of Florida's innocent children.

Mehso-so

There's a lot of police procedural information which I found interesting, however if you're not into it the book could drag in parts. The crime descriptions are very graphic at points, so it is not for the faint hearted. Some great scene setting throughout, descriptions of places are really evocative. Aside from some editing points for continuity and flow, I would definitely recommend this as a good page turner for die-hard crime fiction fans.

It took a little while but I'm getting more into this ARC of The Ghost by Mark Conte which I got via Voracious Readers Only 😸 It's a crime thriller based on a real event and it's shaping up to be a decent read.
