From Cold War to Hot Peace
From Cold War to Hot Peace: An American Ambassador in Putin's Russia | Michael McFaul
7 posts | 2 read | 1 reading | 6 to read
From one of Americas leading scholars of Russia who served as U.S. ambassador to Russia during the Obama administration, a revelatory, inside account of U.S.-Russia relations from 1989 to the present In 2008, when Michael McFaul was asked to leave his perch at Stanford and join an unlikely presidential campaign, he had no idea that he would find himself at the beating heart of one of todays most contentious and consequential international relationships. As President Barack Obamas adviser on Russian affairs, McFaul helped craft the United States policy known as reset that fostered new and unprecedented collaboration between the two countries. And then, as U.S. ambassador to Russia from 2012 to 2014, he had a front-row seat when this fleeting, hopeful moment crumbled with Vladimir Putins return to the presidency. This riveting inside account combines history and memoir to tell the full story of U.S.-Russia relations from the fall of the Soviet Union to the new rise of the hostile, paranoid Russian president. From the first days of McFauls ambassadorship, the Kremlin actively sought to discredit and undermine him, hassling him with tactics that included dispatching protesters to his front gates, slandering him on state media, and tightly surveilling him, his staff, and his family. From Cold War to Hot Peace is an essential account of the most consequential global confrontation of our time.

Mehso-so

It hurts me call this So-so. I enjoy listening & learning to Michael McFaul every chance I get. So I was anxious to read this, & grateful to win a copy from the publisher.
There was a lot I did get out of this.
But it was very detailed - way more than the casual reader will absorb.
For students of US-Russia relations since the 80‘s, this is great! And likely required reading. For anyone else, be aware of how in-depth it is when you pick it up.

Oh, look! Our last president appointed an ambassador to Russia who actually thought about these relations way back in high school.

So my reading right now is weird. I‘ve got a time travel book that‘s chauvinist. A historical fiction that‘s deeply classist and racist. And then this one, which is about unsettling historical and current events. Talk about being a glutton for punishment. Gah!! 😳😱😳😱

DivineDiana That hashtag! 😂 But I know exactly what you mean! Often feel the “required” is destroying my love of reading! 🤨 5y
Decalino Just out of curiosity, what's the time travel book? 5y
BarbaraTheBibliophage @Decalino It‘s from Jack Finney and published in 1998. 5y
BarbaraTheBibliophage @DivineDiana Haha- Thanks! I‘ve just overdone my reading challenges this year. Only a few books to go, but a couple are pretty long. So this type A is sweating it out. And the time travel short story book is fewer pages, so I‘m gonna suck it up. Then write a scathing review!!! 🤓 5y

Pickpick

It may have taken me 10 hours and 10 mins to finish, but this was a good comprehensive look at US-Russian diplomatic relations during Obama‘s presidency. If you don‘t mind a more academic writing style this is a good read.

Made a quick trip out to my local coffee shop to grab lunch! If you‘re also doing the readathon, what are your strategies for meals? I‘d love to hear what you guys have come up with to cut down on the time loss!
