Outlaw | Ted Dekker

The story of how I, Julian Carter, and my precious two-year old son, Stephen, left Atlanta Georgia and found ourselves on a white sailboat, tossed about like a cork on a raging sea off of Australia's northern tip in 1963, is harrowing. But it pales in comparison to what happened deep in the jungle where I was taken as a slave by a savage tribe unknown to the world. Some places dwell in darkness so deep that even God seems to stay away. There, my mind was torn in two by the gods of the earth. There, one life ended so another could begin. Some will say I was a fool for making the choices I made. But they would have done the same. They, too, would have embraced death if they knew what I knew, and saw through my eyes. My name is Julian and this is my story. But more, it is the story of my son who was born to change the world. From deep in the impenetrable jungles where New York Times bestselling author Ted Dekker was born and raised, comes OUTLAW, an epic adventure of two worlds that perhaps only he could write. Full of harrowing twists, sweeping violence, and wild love, Outlaw takes us beyond the skin of this world to another unseen.

Well, that flashing warning of reference to the Little Match Girl as I opened this was all about needed to know this was not going to end well. Ohhhh. A few (okay, maybe a flood) tears this month are a good thing, right? …Thank goodness for epilogues.

I thought since we are coming in to the Christmas season I'd read a seasonal book over the weekend. Grace by Richard Paul Evans is a touching story about the good in people, love and loss, and coming of age. I laughed and smiled all through the book, and then I cried hard.

I really enjoyed Ted Dekker's other novels, and I wanted to like this one. I just didn't and I'm not at all interested in continuing the series.

There should be a gold star option for the book rating. This is my absolute all time favorite book, if you haven't read it I suggest you do. It's a story of love and loss. Grace is a teenage runaway who is pregnant. Her step father has been molesting her for years. Eric takes her in and lets her stay in his clubhouse of rural Utah. They slowly fall in love while police are searching for grace. Eric is living the dream, until that night..

She was a runaway who taught me more about life than anyone has before or since.

A touching tale about a 15 year old girl, Madeline Grace, who runs away from home to escape her abusive step-father. She meets Eric, a 14-year old boy, while looking for food in a dumpster, and the latter helps her hide in his outhouse and takes good care of her. The story is a moving tale about the bond shared between the two children and also highlights the issue of destruction of young lives due to the insensitivity and negligence of adults.
