March reading wrap-up! I finished 9 books, including one eARC from #netgalley. Hard to rank favorites bc I read a bunch of 4⭐️ books this month, but if I had to pick it‘d be Call Them by Their True Names, Never-Contented Things, and the Daisy Jones audiobook.

This book was alright. I liked the idea of this book but I found it kind of confusing and also kind of disturbing. I didn't really like any of the characters except Lexi and Ksenia only at the end of the book. I found Josh annoying even before they were taken and never really connected with him or any of the other characters in the book. I wouldn't read it again and it wouldn't be my first choice as a recommendation.

Going in, I expected lots of evil Fae shenanigans. What I got was a lot of sibling incest, cross dressing, cursing, rape, and maybe 3-5 pages of evil Fae magic. Almost DNF but I pushed through, mostly hoping all the main human characters died off. No such luck though...

Thanks to NetGalley and Tor Teen for access to this dark fantasy about the world of Faerie.

Josh mysteriously disappears one night after partying with a prince of Faerie and his coterie. He returns 3 days later and lures Ksenia to Faerie, where he‘s been promised that he and his foster sister can live together without fear of being parted. Kesenia becomes increasingly unhappy as Josh‘s exposure to Faerie makes him bitter, violent and paranoid.

Carolyn11215 Trigger warning: It was very difficult to get through the first section of the book in which Ksenia repeatedly attempts to set boundaries for her relationship with Josh while he continues to push to make their codependent relationship sexual. And there is brutality/cruelty perpetrated by Faerie folk and humans alike. (edited) 6y
Carolyn11215 The book does a good job of exploring some fairly weighty concepts. How does the foster care system contribute to the damage of youth who pass through it? What is necessary for consent? What are the hallmarks of a healthy relationship? How far would you go to hold on to someone you love? What would you risk to protect someone you love who is in danger? What would you sacrifice for the good of someone you care about? 6y

I just couldn‘t do this one. I was pretty excited about a dark story with fairies, but ended up DNF at around 25%.
I was completely bored with the rambling, tedious POV of the main character, Ksenia, who seemed to just not get it. There were hints of fairies, but not enough to make me engage with the story. And the relationships just felt forced (and cringe-worthy). Maybe all this gets better halfway through, but just wasn‘t worth my time to try.

JPeterson Thanks to NetGalley for a copy in exchange for an unbiased review. 6y

I‘m...really kind of speechless? I need time to think before writing a review on this one because it was one of the weirdest effing books I‘ve ever read. And I mean that in a good way. 🤨
