For fans of Cold Mountain comes the story of a woman in Mormon country, from the author of The Promise and The Personal History of Rachel DuPree. In the inhospitable lands of the Utah Territory, during the winter of 1888, thirty-seven-year-old Deborah Tyler waits for her husband, Samuel, to return home from his travels as a wheelwright. It is now the depths of winter, Samuel is weeks overdue, and Deborah is getting worried. Deborah lives in Junction, a tiny town of seven Mormon families scattered along the floor of a canyon, and she earns her living by tending orchards and making work gloves. Isolated by the red-rock cliffs that surround the town, she and her neighbors live apart from the outside world, even regarded with suspicion by the Mormon faithful who question the depth of their belief. When a desperate stranger who is pursued by a Federal Marshal shows up on her doorstep seeking refuge, it sets in motion a chain of events that will turn her life upside down. The man, a devout Mormon, is on the run from the US government, which has ruled the practice of polygamy to be a felony. Although Deborah is not devout and doesnt subscribe to polygamy, she is distrustful of non-Mormons with their long tradition of persecuting believers of her wider faith. But all is not what it seems, and when the Marshal is critically injured, Deborah and her husbands best friend, Nels Anderson, are faced with life and death decisions that question their faith, humanity, and both of their futures.

As I said when I first posted about this book, I‘m surprised it didn‘t get more love at the time. I don‘t even remember where I first heard about, but it must have been a pretty random mention somewhere that just happened to cross my path. Anyway, it‘s a compelling #historicalfiction about a woman who makes #gloves to supplement the family income. As she waits for her husband who‘s overdue returning from a trip, things happen! #wishesandblessings

This isn't my normal choice of genre (Historical fiction/religion), but I'm glad I downloaded this ARC from Netgalley. Ann clearly did a fair amount of research to make sure the setting of this story was as historically accurate as good be, although the story is purely fictional. There are two major plots happening in this book and the story is told by two different narrators. Really good story telling!

⭐ ⭐ ⭐ ⭐ ⭐ Holy cow, this was really good. A historical novel, set in Utah. Great characters. A deceptively slow-moving story. Beautiful writing. Would make a nice book club choice as there's lots to talk about.

In a tiny settlement tucked away in the #mountains and canyons of frontier Utah, Rebecca waits for her husband to return from a work trip. When a stranger knocks on her door, it sets in motion a series of events that will bring irreparable changes to the community. I really enjoyed this book. Spare and restrained writing with interesting characters and a lot of historical information. I‘m surprised it didn‘t get more “buzz.” #letstraveljuly

Tamra I love spare writing! 5y

In 1888 a cluster of Mormon families live in Junction Utah. Most of them do not believe in plural marriage but still they feel threatened now that polygamy is illegal. Deborah is home alone waiting for the return of her delayed husband when a stranger knocks on her door needing help. Against the feeling of unease in her gut she lets him in and starts a course of events that changes everything. Slow and atmospheric, this book kept me enthralled.
