The Big Black Mark | A. Bertram Chandler

A pivotal time in the career of John Grimes. A fateful journey in the vessel Discovery, bearing an uncanny kinship to the legendary vessel the Bounty. The big black mark on his service record.

It's a retelling of The Mutiny on the Bounty, in space, with Bligh as the hero. And it's almost good: tight prose, interesting character dynamics, decent pacing. I'd give it a "pick" except for raging misogyny. Female characters are introduced by secondary sexual traits, women on board seem to be at the captain's disposal, and the hero (ahem) literally says, "I don't like insolent sl*ts who can't make a decent sandwich." Alas, he survives ...

UCLAoso Yikes! Too bad as it seems you otherwise enjoyed the book 6y
swynn @UCLAoso Yes, there was much to enjoy. Some other time I'd probably have given it a 'so-so', but I'm currently not in a slack-granting mood about this. 5y
UCLAoso @swynn Well worth the pan. I was curious about its publication date and discovered that it‘s 1978 (hard to excuse🤷🏽‍♀️) 5y
swynn @UCLAoso Hmm, my copy appears to be from the first printing and it's dated 1975. Which I mention out of fussiness, because it doesn't change the argument at all. 5y
UCLAoso @swynn I looked it up on GR early this a.m. but as you have the book, I defer to you😉 5y
